    Hi,

I was wondering, can one claim back the VAT paid on petrol which was as a result of the business? It's not much but still 25 euro or so a month....?

    Cheers,

    R.

Unless there was a recent change that I'm not aware, you cannot reclaim VAT on petrol, you might consider purchasing a diesel next time around as the VAT can be reclaimed. Also of note and I think not widely known is the following, I'm coping an internal company email below:

Up until the 01.01.2009 a company purchasing a car was not entitled to reclaim the VAT on its purchase of the vehicle (the only exceptions being motor dealers, car hire companies and driving schools)

However a new rule which came into effect on 01.01.09 provides that VAT registered companies can claim 20% of the VAT incurred in respect of the purchase of certain cars.

The new rules are complex and I will not outline them all here, but in case you get a query, you will at least be aware of a change.

The car must be first registered after 01.01.09 and fall in CO2 emission bands A,B or C (less than 156g/KM)
The car must be primarily used for business purposes (defined as at least 60% business use) and the company must hold the vehicle for at least 2 years.

What about using petrol in a generator or machinery?

You are permitted to claim vat on Petrol used in generators etc. You can also claim back for any Oil or Kerosene used to power or heat your business premises/equipment
