    hi there

I,m looking to shoot some rabbits in Meath but there doesnt seem to be a lot around. I would be looking to cook some also, so would like em healthy. Anyone know of any lands that I could shoot a few rabbits on with my .22 given the farmers/clubs permission of course... only for rabbits and not game.

    Much appreciated... M

ps.. do other hunters normally eat the rabbits or are they for the dogs... just wondering on the old maximotosis (can spell the thing :o)

Mixy is generally seen at this time of year (late August Sept if seen at all)

If they have Bulgy eyes and Mucus around their mouths leave them where they are.

    Can't help you in Meath.

    Ask Landkeeper!!

    thanks lads..

one of the lads in the Sports Den in Navan was telling me there is loads where he is so yes maybe its a matter of asking about.

Do farmers in general mind you shooting rabbits or their land or are they not bothered either way.

    rgd M

ps.. elius, do you each the wabbit or just for sport and culling

Always ask, its not the shooting per say that is the issue, Trespass is of more a concern.

75% of farmers will say yeah no problem, Just ask!

Make sure you ask the landowners permission, shooting on someones land without their could potentially land ya in a lot of hot water ;)

Down this part of the world the concerns are for horses and cattle legs when burrows collapse, and also sand blowing off beachy areas, and the sheer loss of grazing in some places.

One permission will generally lead to another when you're doing a good job. You'll also start to pick up bits of info on other areas from local chats, so keep the ears open.

No always ask and one permission will always open up another permission! if you dont have insurance id really reccomend getting it piece of mind when your out and about. Just be polite and you shouldn't have a proplem.

At the moment i'm doing a touch of culling only because there is hundred of them and he wants numbers brought down to a respectable level though i have brought home some! If i new a game dealer local (meath) id happily bring them up but i dont know off any so im left with little choice but to cull them.
And folk wont even take them off you for fear of mixy even though these are perfectly clean..:(

Once properly cooked, mixy is absolutely no harm to people. Though because of the visual appearance and eventual effects on the rabbit it's no wonder they're not eaten.

+1 Harmless for humans, not the tastiest bunny though, the meat of sick animals will never taste the best

It shame's me because these bunny are perfect there's not a touch of mixi on them. I don't have the room in the freezer to store the amount of rabbits there are. If i find a game dealer local id love nothing more than to give them to people or dealer. I'm not looking to benefit financially. Id rather see them eaten though but with the amount there i understand why he wants them brought to a respectable level. And they just have to be culled. In hindsight aswell it helps to keep numbers controlled to prevent the like's of mixi settling in. And hopefully it will help keep them clean...

Think its time to invest in a second freezer.

I'd treat mixy bunnies like mangey foxes, shoot on sight. Be an ease to the animal if nothing else.
