    Cockpit Drill
    • Safety Check (look over shoulder to see if anything is coming)
    • Door (ensure it is closed properly by holding the handle with your right hand and opening the door with your left and quickly closing it again. As the examiner to check their door)
    • Seat - Base, Back, Headrest
    • Seatbelt (ask the examiner to put his/hers on)
    • Handbrake
    • Neutral
    • Mirrors (Centre, left then right)
    • Turn Key to Auxilliary
    • Check there's enough fuel for the journey

Dunno what you mean by "moving around" Can you be more specific?

    The Reverse

Aim: Good clutch control with slow speed & slow steering
    • Clutch down & select reverse gear
    • Find the biting point
    • 360 deg. observation from right to left (lift your bum off the seat slightly when looking out the back window - looking for kids)
    • If safe, release handbrake, move back slowly
    • STOP when kerb moves into the left corner of your left mirror = Point of Turn
    • 360 deg. observation again with an additional look into the new road
    • Move back slowly, turning the wheel slowly
    • Keep kerb in the corner of your left mirror
    • Halfway around the corner STOP. Again 360 deg. observation with an additional look to the right
    • Start moving back, straightening the wheel as you go
    • Keep reversing until asked to stop.

    Moving Off
    • Clutch down to the floor
    • Select 1st Gear
    • Bring clutch out slowly to the biting point
    • Centre mirror
    • Right signal
    • Right Mirror
    • Blind Spot (right shoulder)
    • If safe, release the handbrake and move of slowly into the road.

    Stopping
    • Left mirror
    • Left signal
    • Centre Mirror
    • Brake gently
    • Cover clutch and move the car over nearer the kerb
    • Cluth down and brake gently to a stop
    • Handbrake
    • Neutral
    • Relax - make sure signal is cancelled

Turning Right (into a side road)
    • Right mirror
    • Right signal
    • Centre mirror
    • Brake gently
    • Position (just to the left of the road centre line. Point of turn is when the front of your car lines up with the centre line of the new road)
    • Clutch down and into 2nd gear
    • Off clutch
    • If safe, one final look in your right mirror (checking for bikes etc) then turn

On the approach look into the new road as early as possible to look for any possible obstructions/hazards and again just before you make your turn

Emerging Right (from a side road to a main road)

    On the Approach
    • Right mirror
    • Right signal
    • Centre mirror
    • Brake gently
    • Observations - footpaths either side of the road and across the junction
    • Position - just to the left of the road centre line

    At Point of Turn
    • 1st Gear
    • Look LEFT the RIGHT
    • Off clutch
    • If safe, move around the corner - The point you start turning is when the centre of the new road disappears from view at the front of your car

NEVER ask the examiner to put on their belt. They have the right to leave it off.
Never mind the door you'll have enough on your mind. Just give it a good bang going in and you'll be sound boss.

When reversing exaggerate head turning, mirror watching when reversing and taking off.

Good look. Remember you can make mistakes. My sister cut out during her test and still passed. -Only counted as one!

You should always ask the examiner to put it on, he or she will tell you it's ok. They do have the right not to wear it but you should ALWAYS ask

    The door must be checked.

The cockpit drill is a sequence of checks working from right to left in the car and that's how it's best remembered

    • Left Mirror
    • Left Signal
    • Centre Mirror
    • Brake Gently
    • Observe the footpaths, left, right and straight ahead
    • Position - move in gently nearer the kerb
    • Clutch down and into 1st gear
    • Off clutch
    • If safe, move around the corner

    The Turnabout

Think about the manoeuvre in 3 stages.

    Stage 1
    • Clutch down
    • Select 1st Gear
    • Gently raise the clutch and find the biting point
    • Centre mirror
    • Right signal
    • Right mirror
    • Check the blind spot over the right shoulder
    • If safe, move off slowly, turning and locking the wheel to the right
    • Clutch down and brake gently to a stop just before the kerb
    • Handbrake on

    Stage 2
    • Reverse gear
    • Biting point
    • 360 deg. observations
    • If safe, handbrake off and move back slowly looking over you left shoulder and steering quickly to the LEFT
    • As the car gets half way across the road change and look over your right shoulder to find the kerb
    • Brake gently to a stop just before the kerb
    • Handbrake

    Stage 3
    • 1st Gear
    • Biting point
    • 300 deg observations (no need to look behind you)
    • If safe, handbrake off and move of slowly steering to the right
    • Stop where safe by following the procedure for stopping

Remember - if at any time a vehicle comes towards you that they have Right of Way. You may have to complete a stage to allow them to pass. Try and get eye contact with the other driver to assess their intentions.

Also - if you see kids walking/playing along the footpath behind you as you are about to start Stage 3 DON'T start it, allow them to pass. This is in case your foot slips off the clutch.

Good stuff here, many thanks! I need to hear all this as try to teach daughter to drive and it is a long time since I sat a test :) or took a lesson. Yes she has done set of formal lessons, now needs to get out on roads. So much to master in busy suburbs of Dublin and so many hill starts around where I live  It is hard to find a quiet place to drive, so many parked cars on side roads now and car parks full and in use all week. Worst week of year to hit the roads too with return of schools etc.

The Hill Start is exactly the same procedure as Moving Off with the introduction of some gas

Thanks for this! Have my test next week and this is great to revise *exactly* what you should be doing at each stage.

Thanks a million! I'll need it - just realised the schools are back next week and it's around rush hour so it'll be extra challenging. I'll give it a go anyway...

You'll be fine. My driving test was at 9am on a Friday morning in Glasgow....that was busy!! My Stage 2 and Stage 3 ADI Tests were also at 9am....oh the joys!

Just relax but stay focussed, be observant and drive the way you've been taught
