Going for an interview on Tuesday. It said on the website you need a portfolio. What would this consist of?

    Thanks.

Preferably look at work you have previously done, maybe in school, or just for yourself. You do not need a huge amount, maybe 5 - 8 samples showing drawing and painting skills, using different materials. Include studies of an object, a shoe or a couple of mugs or a pile of books, in different media - anything from coloured pencils to torn paper. Choose a corner or feature in a room and sketch that. If you have any cartoon type drawing you could include it. A sample of photography if that is your strong point. Show off what you are best at. If you have anything produced digitally you could include that, but not essential.

Show it off tidily in some sort of folder, doesn't have to be an expensive portfolio, but presentation is important.

"This three year course provides a comprehensive study of the communication and media production business. The course is conducted in a relaxed yet stimulating environment and has both practical and academic dimensions. Students can gain“hands on” skills and emphasis is on production of high quality media. Access to the most modern equipment enables students to reach professional production standards."

I doubt I need sketches for that.

    Why not?

I'd advise against this course. I did it myself and it in no way prepares you for working in the real world and isn't considered highly by any of the professionals I've met working in Sound, Photography or TV.

Re. Portfolio I had only photographic work in mine and got in. A friend who mainly had sketches was directed to one of the Animation courses and refused from the media and comms course.

OK, I stand corrected. However you should not be expected to have, for example, photography or technology samples in your portfolio. This is level 5 fetac, it starts at pretty well first principles, and that is what you are going to learn on the course, not what you need to already know.

The portfolio should show your ability to think creatively, not necessarily to be able to draw. All the media equipment is just tools, you use them to be creative whether in sound or visuals, they are not an end in themselves.

Ok, I gave them a ring back and they said I only needed my Leaving Cert results.
