im just wondering does anybody know of a music store in dublin that has a fender bass vi where i could have a play around with it ??? i love the sound and i would just love to own one , i love the 6 strings bass sound. also does any body know any relatively cheap six string basses?? i have tried to search the vi bass on internet but im getting ones that are 3000 etc , surely you can get cheaper ones like that ?? also even if i cant get this bass/guitar etc , could i even get the strings that would go on a vi bass and and put them on a guitar and the sound ?

if you can give us a hand cheers ,

not to be defeatist, but you haven't a hope of finding one in Ireland, infact i'd say most UK stores wouldn't have one!

ring fender GBI and ask which stores were shipped fender bass VI's recently (is it still in production??)

then start ringing those stores and get a ryanair flight over to the nearset airport!

They're not in production anymore. These things are golddust, and you probably won't find one anywhere in the world for less than a few grand.

You could get a baritone Jaguar though.

What a sweet looking guitar, I feel a project coming on to build one of them.

The warmoth webpage seems to have the parts

You could try putting 13s or 14s or something on a regular guitar and tuning it to B standard, but it's the long scale that you're looking for.

There's a baritone Jaguar. It looks like it's pretty similar to the Bass VI, but without a middle pickup, vibrato, and a different body shape. Why didn't they put the vibrato on this?? The pickup claws would lead me to believe it's the same as a Jaguar inside?

Check out www.offsetguitars.com , it's the largest collection of Fender offset info on the internet. A few guys on there have Bass VIs, do a search for some threads.

I'm confused. The Bass VI is a six string bass, not a six string guitar isn't it?

    ye basically

I recall John Palmer Music in Waterford and Pro Musica in Cork having them in recent times

My bad. I was under the impression it was a Baritone. Do I have to hand in my Fender offset fanboy card now? :p

    Soz!

To be fair I've often heard it described as a baritone too because it has a shorter scale then most basses.

Edit: I must call into Palmer's and see if he has one, won't be buying it though. :p

That wouldn't work. For a start bass strings are a lot thicker than guitar strings so you'd have to do some serious filing of the nut.

I play an Ibanez SR706 and I love it. The wide neck takes a lot of getting used to but having a 3 octave spread of notes just by going down the strings is great. I can't remember exactly how much I paid but it was around the $600 mark.

Is it not tuned the same as a 6 string bass (high to low CGDAEB)?

It's tuned same as a bass

Just imagine it's the same scale as a mustang bass
And tuned like a normal bass But with an added high B & E

Burns Barracuda does the job too, lovely instrument, again, I think Pro Musica in Cork might have one, as may Sound Shop in Drogheda iirc.

Lots of nice little oddities like these scattered around the music shops of the country

So its lower four strings are standard bass strings but then it adds an E and B to be like a guitar? That sounds quite odd but at the same time I'd like to play one to see how it handles.

Just throwing in another option, wouldn't be my cup of tea either.
Using it as a bass the string spacing would be too uncomfortable for me anything smaller than 16mm no thanks,

The setups on all these types of basses must be a complete f@@ker to do. It would be basically tune an standard A well slightly thicker .095 string tuned to E and then its short scale to boot.

I think that Ibanez bass looks great but then I am biased ;). In my playing I like to maintain a clear distinction between guitar and bass. Why muddy the waters between the two? If you want to play the guitar, go and play the damn guitar and if you want to play the bass, go and play the bass.

it worked out pretty good for new order & the cure :D

the holy hack of that !!!:eek:

To clear up a little confusion:

Baritone guitars usually have longer scale than normal guitars and are usually tuned down a fourth (b to b) or a fifth (a to a) from normal tuning

6 string basses have standard bass scale lengths and are tuned beadgc (low b/high c added)

What I call 6 string bass guitars ( bass vi etc) have a scale lengthy between baritone and standard bass and are tuned a full octave below a guitar.
