Hi guys just a quick one. My 98 5 series has a faulty coolant level sensor and every time car is started and turned off it warns me of low coolant. Anybody know If this will cause an nct failure?

Probably Fail, see if you can short out ( connect together) the wires that go to the coolant level float , alternatively take out the sensor and see if fiddling around with it fixes problem, last resort cut connection to bulb on circuit board to dash warning light.

    *Ignore Bigus' post*

You should be alright, they'll only fail you on ABS, SRS and traction control systems.

Are you sure it's a faulty sensor and not a low coolant level?

Don't go messing around with the sensor, you won't be able to fix it - don't remove it unless you've some coolant to replace whatever comes out of the system. And whatever you do, don't go snipping wires behind the instrument cluster:rolleyes:

The NCT and warning lights, they will fail you if your airbag warning light is on yet completly ignore the fact that industry standards say the lifespan of airbags are 10 years so OK if your airbags might not work once the light does, Safety HUH!

The manual is available on the NCT site in PDF format. That will give you all the reasons for failure.

When the engine is cold, remove the sensor (its item 20 here http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E39/Sedan/Europe/520i-M52/RHD/A/2000/march/browse/radiator/radiator_expansion_tank_frame/ ) and clean it. If you can get someone to put their finger in the hole while you do this you wont lose too much fluid. if that fails replace it.

It depends on the car. AFAIK the figure for Mercedes is 14 years, while Volvo airbags don't need to be replaced at all.

Hi guys thanks, panic over looks like I'll be ok to leave the way it is for now.

Yeah it's just the level sensor. I got a new rad fitted and the sensors don't like being moved apparently
