saw you got a partial answer on Rootschat. I'm assuming you're trying to establish why the 3 Hobson's are on the memorial in Carlow.

His medal card has his widow at an address in North Wales so looks like she survived. Date of entering theatre of war (France) 7th June 1916. Seems to have gone in as an officer straight away.

References to him in the LG :

There is a will for Nathaniel James Fennell Hobson on Ancestry but my subscription doesn't give access.

His birth record is on familysearch but doesn't state which year he was born nor who the parents were.

I was going to discount the Nathaniel James Hobson on the 1911 census in Belfast (who signed the Ulster Covenant)

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002207659/

however, there is a birth record on FamilySearch for a Nathaniel Thomas Fennell Hobson in Larne 1909 which could tie in with the young Nathaniel Thomas on the 1911 census return.

    Name: Nathaniel Thomas Fennell Hobson
    Registration District: Larne
    Event Type: BIRTHS
Registration Quarter and Year: Jul - Sep 1909

Nathaniel senior appears to be the son of a Wicklow and Laios couple, Abraham and Elizabeth :

They appear to be in Dublin in 1911

Familysearch has a birth record for a daughter in Co Louth where the parents are Abraham Hobson and Elizabeth Fennell :

    Name: Cathren Jane Hobson Hobson
    Gender: Female
    Baptism/Christening Date:
    Baptism/Christening Place:
    Birth Date: 01 Sep 1879
    Birthplace: Louth, Ireland
    Death Date:
    Name Note:
    Race:
    Father's Name: Abraham Hobson
    Father's Birthplace:
    Father's Age:
    Mother's Name: Elizabeth Fennell
    Mother's Birthplace:
    Mother's Age:

    Reference Number: v 2-1 p 472
Collection: Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881

Abraham Hobson appears to have died in Carlow

    Name: Abraham Hobson
    Registration District: Carlow
    Event Type: DEATHS
Registration Quarter and Year: Apr - Jun 1920
    Estimated Birth Year: 1836
    Age (at Death): 84
    Mother's Maiden Name:
    Film Number: 0101608
    Volume Number: 3
    Page Number: 245
    Digital Folder Number: 4201712
    Image Number: 00084
Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958

all a bit tenuous. The will might open things up a bit more.

    Hello Johnny.
Actually I know why they are on the memorial in Leighlinbridge but I was looking for the Carlow connection which at this moment eludes me. I thought the 'Unreturned Army' might have it but no it seems. Your reference to Abraham nails it for me anyway.
Your extra data will be a great help to me and I very much appreciate your taking the time and effort to look up the Hobsons for me.
    Kindest regards and thanks again.
    Tom.

turns out it's not a will but a probate record :

Nathaniel James Fennell Hobson of Daffodil Road, Claughton, Birkenhead Lt HM Army died 10th Oct 1918 at sea when the SS Leinster was torpedoed. Admin Chester 24th June 1919 to Elizabeth Mary Hobson. Effects £218 1s 4d

    on the same sheet :

Richard Henry Raymond Fennell Hobson of same address as above etc. Admin Chester 5th June 1919 to Elizabeth Mary Hobson widow. Effects £233
