Hi, i applied for a medical card last week, and i have to go to the hospital for a procedure in a few days which will cost a couple of hundred Euro's.
My question is will i be covered by my medical card as i have applied for it last week or will i not be able to be covered by it as its has not been issued yet and i have no number for it.
I know if you apply for social welfare it is backdated to the date you applied and i wonder is it the same for a medical card?
I really cant afford the bill as im on the dole and im just surviving as it is and i have no savings whatsoever.

Ad far as I remember, the MC is not backdated. It will take a couple of weeks at least to get the card, if not longer (mine took 8 months), depending on the backlog in the HSE area. I would contact the hospital and see if there is anything that they can do, or contact the HSE and explain the situation - they may be able to issue you with the MC number, if not the card.

You will only have to pay for your overnight stay if you are a public patient.
It will be at least a few weeks before you get the bill.
At that stage the HSE should know if you are entitled or not even though you may not have received the card in the post. They are posted now from Dublin AFAIK
If you are entitled to one ring the hosp and give them your number so the bill will be cancelled out. If you pay the bill and then receive your card in the post you will be entitled to a refund
Was it a renewal or a new application?
