Lately (well for the past 4-6 weeks) I have had continuous spots and blemishes.

I use the Witch Hazel Clear Pore Gel and the spots usually go down/disappear within a day or two, but lately they go down, but come up somewhere else.

I also have red patches and my skin is is flaky in places.

Even with make-up on, the spots, flaky patches and red patches are still visible.

Can anyone recommend anything to get rid of the please? Or at least hide them. I am in Dublin next Monday and Tuesday, fwiw.

    I have combination skin.

    Thanks.

My sister recently started using La Roche Posay Effaclar range and swears by it. Her skin has cleared up in about 3 - 4 weeks with a noticeable difference.

She uses the Foaming Gel wash and the daily renewable fluid.

Not sure if it's any help to you but I find one of the best things to do to get them to calm down is to press cold potato slices on them for a few minutes and then let the starch dry on the skin overnight, it really reduces the redness and lumpiness loads and foundation takes to them much easier then the next day. The other brilliant home remedy is aloe vera gel whether from a tube or straight from the plant, it reduces swelling and redness really effectively overnight. I used to have pretty bad skin until quite recently and this worked better than any creams, gels or remedies I could find. I used to make a really effective homemade toner using witchhazel, distilled water and certain aromatherapy oils too to keep the pores tighter and disinfected. There are very good cheap homemade alternatives to the expensive treatments that often do feck all.

I think you might need an anti oxidant. I use a great one but its very expensive. You could also look at getting a facial, the person doing it should be able to recommend some things for your skin. I know a few make up counters ( clarins, origins, dior) do facials for the 25 euro back against purchases thing i think. Or go to a beauty salon.

Thanks for the help everyone. I will definitely try some of the suggestions.

@ Sapsorrow Would this Aloe Vera gel be ok to use on them? It's the only Aloe Vera Gel I have (I am out of Witch Hazel until tomorrow).

How do you mean 'facials back against products'? And where are they? (i.e BTs, Arnotts, Clearys etc).

    Thanks.

You know the way make up counters do your make up for 25-40 ish euro and you get it back against products? Some counters do facials in the same way. I'm actually not sure if clarins do that or charge outright. I love dior make up so i go to dior because i'm buying this stuff so its esentially a free facial. I think all the diors so it, i know house of fraser and arnotts do it anyway. I find house of fraser a bit more 'helpful' than arnotts. Arnotts have a touch of the hard sell about them but they do have good advice.

Hmmm not sure about that would need to see the ingredients list, the stuff I mean is literally just aloe vera and a preservative or two. You can get it from the health food shop. Otherwise I'd reccomend buying a plant and using that as the active chemicals would be more effective fresh. You can just cut the tip off a leaf to use whenever you need it, my old faithful aloe has been serving me for years now.

The antioxidant thing is a scam btw, antioxidants aren't going to do diddly squat when applied topically to the skin they are oxidized immediately on contact with air and rendered inactive and wouldn't survive the manufacturing process where heat and oxygen would be abundant. If you want the benefits of antioxidants you've got to eat them and even then it's not gauranteed to be beneficial. Try taking a vitamin E supplement if you want to try using them.

Worth a mention is that dairy is often the root cause of peoples acne. If you look up Dr. Cordains work on google scholar you can read up on it, his studies are usually availabe for free. If I so much as look at cheese I can feel the itching starting, barely had a pimple since I gave the stuff up.

Interesting thread, my skin has broken out the past few weeks too:(, same spots in the same place which aint going anywhere. Interesting about the Dairy, might look into trying to limit it in my diet. Gonna try the Aloe Vera and the spuds too:pac:.

I still don't understand lol (I am not with it today).

Do you mean, if I spend €40 on a facial, I can get products worth €40 without paying extra?

    Thanks for your help though.

I think this is one of the roots of my bad skin but I can't bear to give cheese or ice cream up!

Can anyone help with the above question please?

Also, if I was to get a facial with Clarins/whoever, do I need to make a an appointment or do I just walk in off the street?

    Thanks.

    Hi OP,
I would suggest you slice up a garlic clove before you go to bed and put it on your spots, the nucleic acid in the garlic works wonders in clearing up them.

Hi All, i had problems with my skin at 15 yrs old (29 now)- went on roaccutane twice (17 & 20 yrs old) - worked both times but incrediably harsh - dry red itchy skin & very expensive. So when I broke out again on my chin about 4 yrs ago I tried the chinese herbal route. It worked a dream with none of the harsh side affects I had with the roaccutane. Cut out fried foods (used to love my big irish breakfasts), white bread & dairy (couldn't give up the milk in my tea though), wash face with a very gentle cleanser morning & night, dab on chinese lotion (101E) onto problems area after cleanser, let it dry & put on gentle non-perfumed moisturiser, take 8 tablets (chinese ones that herbalist gave me) 3 times a day. Clear skin 4 weeks later with an odd pimple around menstrual cycle since. I broke out again on the chin area 2 weeks ago & started back with the herbal route - looking froward to clear skin again which I should have in about 4 weeks time if it works as well as it did before. Its a mystery as to what caused them to come back but Im going to go with what worked before. I hope this helps someone out there.

Try steaming your face over a sink of boiled water and put a towel over your head to hold the heat in. Then use your normal cleanser. This will clean the open pores out. When you get a spot, put tea tree oil on it. Its natural and will disinfect the spot.
If your skin is flaky, then you need to exfoliate more, up to twice a week.

I've tried Dermalogica, Clarins, Simple etc and the one I keep going back to is Clean and Clear, their cleanser really works and the exfoliater is really gentle. My skin is really clear and I rarely get spots, (my diet wouldn't be the best but I drink upwards of 2 litres of water a day).

I'm heading to Dublin this afternoon, so wondering if anyone can clarify on the facial/money against products question please?

If I spend €40 (or however much) on a facial with X brand, will that brand then allow me €40 worth in products of give me €40 off some products?

    Thanks.

Yeah. Basically, you spend forty euro on the facial, you get to choose products up to the value of that forty euro. If it comes to more, you have to add money to it. If I comes to less, I doubt you get your change back (but I could be mistaken).

Ask your GP or pharmacist for advice. Make sure it's the qualified pharmacist and not the make up/cosmetics salesperson. There are a few types of acne and they need different treatment.

Mineral foundations really helped me, they soak up oil on your skin. It looks better if you use a light foundation all over and concealer on spots, rather than heavy foundation all over.

Sometimes after you eat oily food, oil can slide down onto your chin (if you press your lips together you can feel it) so watch out for that and wash your face if you have to. Also, if you touch oily food, you're likely to touch your face with greasy fingers. I just have to avoid it completely, even though it's obviously not very healthy to cut out fat.

    www.acne.org is great

Facials aren't going to make a big difference in the long run and won't address the cause of the acne, although they can brighten your skin up and make you feel better. I enjoy them. You don't get acne because you're dirty, so excessive deep cleansing isn't the solution. Most people with acne over-wash, and this removes a protective barrier on the skin and allows more bacteria in.

    Thanks everyone.

I went to BTs and the girl at the Clinique counter was very helpful and recommend some products for me.

I bought them lol and so far the seem to be working, she did say it would take about one-month for my skin to totally clear-up, but so far, I have noticed an improvement and I've only been using the products for a few days.

For anyone interested, I bought the following and got a free gift.

    I bought the following:

New Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Concealer (I got both corrective green and shade 01)
    Anti-Blemish Solutions Clear Blemish Gel
    Anti-Blemish Solutions Liquid Makeup

The free gift I got had the following in it:

Anti-Blemish Solutions Cleansing Bar for Face and Body
    Anti-Blemish Solutions Clarifying Lotion
    Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Moisturizer

The gift-set had decently sized products, should get at least 3-4 weeks (maybe more) with them (and that's using them twice a day, morning and night).

Hope this can help someone else who suffers with spots like me.
