What exercises would one recommend so that I can improve my return serve?

How does one get the ball back when it seems to very close to the wall??

you should try, as much as possible, to volley the ball down the wall. your aim is to get as much length on it as possible so your opponent is forced down to the backhand corner.
your last resort for a high lobbing serve would be a boast of the side or back wall...but only as a last resort.

...oh, and be careful to not get sucked into close to the wall. that will just hamper your swing.

There are some good online resources that might help....

Volley rallying with a partner is a good drill for return of serves.

Play two shots each - volley one straight to yourself, then volley one cross court to your partner. He does the same - volleys one straight to himself and them volleys one back cross court.

See how many shot you can do without the ball touching the floor.
