I was always brought up being told milk was good for you, bones teeth and all that. For as long as I can remember Ive been drinking atleast 5 Litres of milk
a week, almost a full litre with my dinner Monday to Friday and the odd glass at the weekend.

Today I was a little shocked to hear that milk is bad for me/us and I shouldnt be drinking it at all :confused:

So which is it?? Should I give up milk?? Would drinking only water help me lose a small amount of weight??

    Cheers :pac:

No milk is not bad for you unless you're lactose intolerant or have a dairy allergy.

Drinking only water instead of milk may possibly help you lose a small amount of weight because (assuming other dietry habits remain unaffected*) you will be consuming less calories.

    Other factors to consider however:
-Milk (especially whole milk) is very filling, if you stop drinking it you'll feel hungrier and probably consume other (possibly much worse?) foods to make up for it.
-5L of milk per week means that it likely makes up a decent portion of your protein consumption. If you were to suddenly cut it out of your diet, any weight loss may be due to loss of muscle-tone and not so much due to loss of fat.

In a nutshell if you want to lose weight (though you'll find info all over this forum, look at the stickies) it's better to cut out the crap (crisps, sugar etc), slightly reduce your portion size of everything (including milk), and heavily reduce your portion size of starches/grains (bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta etc.)

Ive cut down alot on the rubbish (posted here a few months ago :) ) Ive completely cut crisps out, cut down alot on bread, portion size is a good idea

Im usually starving by the time I get home from work so eat a fairly big dinner but I did cut down on the spuds... just seems I eat a little more meat/veg

I'll cut down a small bit on the milk, but I do love it so greatful I dont have to give it up :P

Suppose its alot better that a can of coke every evening :pac:

    Thanks

OP, can you please tell us where you heard that milk isn't good for you?

The above poster has already gone through the benefits, all I can do is re-enforce the message - drink milk.

In my opinion milk isn't ideal for weight loss as lactose is a particularly insuligenic sugar. Also there is evidence for harmful effects of casein worth looking into, in particular in terms of tumorigenesis.

Any food has pros and cons. For instance, everyone will tell you to eat your green veg (God knows I repeat it often enough) but if you have thyroid problems, you might been to restrict brassicas (cabbage and broccoli etc) because they can be goitrogens. it doesn't mean that you shouldn't eat veg.

As long as you do not have problems with milk, I can't see the problem. Just don't drink it to the exclusion of all else.
