    Hi all,
l got a phone call last night from a neighbour who was standing in one of his fields looking at three wild boar rooting away for food. l have shot deer for this man before so he knew to ring me. At first i did'nt believe him and thought he was mistaken. So i went home for the .243 and went down to him and could not believe my eyes when i went down to him. There was three wild boars in his field.
After looking at them for a while we decided to go ahead and shoot them. there was one big one and two smaller ones. l lined up a shot and hit the big one in the chest, down it went. the other two ran off only for one of them to stop and come back. this one also received a bullet. So when all was done i was looking at two dead female boars. l contacted npws and they came out and had a look at them (l have them hanging in the garage). they reckon the big one is at least 75% wild boar and some other pig mix. the smaller one has wild boar in it but not sure how much. the ranger was telling me of other sightings in the area but has asked me to go back and try and get the other one.
Still cant believe i have two of them hanging in the garage!!!

This fella isnt a Tamworth and a Tammy may be mistaken for a Wild Boar by some as he is a very hairy ginger fella and also a very rare pig aswell, very rare in Ireland.

The above is a tamworth and they were bread using wildbore. Thus some grow to very much resemble a wild bore like these. Though most are ginger.

Trying to be fair here and not to knit pick

However, the pics are of poor Quality.
If the public could see a pic with todays paper in the background I'm guessing many more would believe.

many Hoaxes on here over the past few years.
It's a case of "the boy who cried wolf syndrome"
Hard to believe when we have heard so much "PORKIE PIES " :D

guys i'm from near boyle .
a lot of lads involved in hunting knew
    about these WILD BOAR.
the truth is they were practically tame
one well known deer hunter in the area
chased them into a wood/bog by
    throwing stones at them.
he was kinda hoping they might breed.

    hi all
just to clear up a few things l am not a hoaxer:mad:

l am the same fella who last year posted pics of wild boar on the curlew mountains. They were in no way photo shopped and i take offence at the remark.

the pictures arent great because it was dusk. l am also more than happy for anyone to come up and see the boar hanging in my shed. So if you think im bullsh*ting, by all means pm me and we can arrange you to see them. l think that it is unfair to dirty my name when im giving everyone hear a chance to come and see them if they wish and make up their own mind.

Also please feel free to ring the npws in ballinfad co sligo and ask them about the boar.

I understand your frustration "but" the easiest way to solve this is a photo of them up close and personal.

Hi everyone, I work in photoshop everyday. Have done for years, I also worked as a photographer for years. The last image, the one in the snow seemed fine... what do you mean by photoshopped? Do you mean the OP got a pic of pigs and put them in a different background? Why? There were no distinguishable features in the background. If he was dishonest he would have just got the image from google. Photographing in the snow is a nightmare anyway, the brightness fools the camera altogether sometimes leaving weird photos.

The photos in this thread are crap. They are low res, but not 'photoshopped'.... Here is one that I have photoshopped, all I have done is arse around with the contrast and brightness. It's still as low res as it was, but what I did brought out more detail that was already there.... no dishonesty, just enhancement, looks like a dead pig, some ragworth and grass.

    pig.jpg

I would say, judging by the photos and my knowledge of photoshop, the photos are genuine!

    My two cent.

They are not a protected species. They have no season and there's no defined minimum calibre. However, if one were to use something insufficient, one would be subject to accusations of animal cruelty. I'd say anything north of 6.5mm would be accepted, but personally I'd prefer a .30 calibre. Tough buggers.

Just because something isnt on a protected list doesnt mean you can legally shoot it or does it?

I think i would like to see the words where it says it can be shot and not make an interpretation of a list which was done before anybody knew they were there. For example, are hedgehogs on this protected list? If not does that mean it's ok to shoot them or even legal? And then why would anybody want to shoot something that is rare or harmless?

Given that it's a species for which Irish law is not written, it not having been present at the time (if meaningfully so now) it can't have been written into protection.

I am not a million miles away from Boyle and will happily go an take an independent photo of the boar hanging in boyle's shed as long as I get a lump!!! yum yum!!!!, that tamworth pig looked very like my two potbellied pigs too!!:D

Mmmmm I understand exactly what you are saying but you are given your gun on condition that you are allowed to shoot certain animals not that you can shoot everything and anything not on a list...is that not correct?

Or does it say somewhere that you can shoot anything that it is not on a protected list ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

If it's not a designated protected species, then by definition there can be no open season for it and it can be killed at any time. Red squirrels, badgers, deer are examples of protected species (In the case of deer, an open season exists for their legal killing). Unprotected species include rabbits, foxes, and any hypothetical wild boar you encounter. These have no open or closed season and can be shot at any time. There's no list of "vermin" or any other such designation, which is I expect what's confusing you. There is no presumption of protection unless so written.

No tusk's kildare they were three females. ls it just males with tusks?

If Wild Boar have become established in Ireland then there should be some sort of protection/season for a species that was once native to this Island according to recent research findings. Under various EU and UN articles/treaties Ireland is under an obligation to restore/re-introduce(within reason) any species that was made nationally extinct by human induced pressures.
