    Hi
what is the difference between 5W 30 and 5W 40 for a petrol 3 series? I know it has to be fully synthetic.

    Cheers

It's viscosity when hot, which oil is recommended for the car ? Use that one anyway.

I just found out its 5W 30 but I bought 5W 40 this morning. Would it make a huge difference if I used it?

Any warrenty issues or trouble down the line will be blamed on you using the wrong oil. By rule of thumb, use the recomended oil. I don't think that it will make a huge difference myself but if the car is going for a long life service interval - I would deffo use the correct recomended oil.
Remember that is recomended for a good reason.

    Usually marketing and partnership reasons.

My 5 series originally was recommended 5w40 semi-synth. Now bmw recommend that all cars are fully synth. They recommend castrol as well - wonder why :pac:

    M cars use TWS 10w60
