    Hi

My sister has been offered what seems like a good car as a gift. It has no tax nct and is not insured. How does she go about getting it? Ideal would be to bring it in for its NCT and there find out what work it may need to pass. However to drive it she'd need insurance, and tax etc, even someone insured couldn't drive it as the car has no ins disk. Chicken and egg senerio. I'm sure there are lots of situations like this, cars off the road for a while etc... How does it work with garages etc?
Perhaps she could get it towed to a garage to get it looked over, but after that? Towed to her house, stored off road until tax arrives.. Insured then taxed, then Nct'd? Gota be an easier way..ideas?

    Tnks

1 Register Car in her own name
    2 Insure Car
3 Tax Car (cannot tax an uninsured car)
4 NCT (cannot NCT an uninsured or untaxed car)
5 If car passes NCT, go to Step 8.
6 Present car to garage with list of required repairs
7 Garage returns car with repairs done. Go to Step 4
    8 Drive around legally

beat me too it. mine was similar although already NCT'ed.

    (i) get vechael registration cert from owner, fill out realavent sections and send off to shannon, this part actually takes the longest. because you need to produce the new cert to get the tax disk.

(ii) get a few quotes, they can sometimes insure you there and then either online or over the phone, call them to get a better quote, could save hundreds, although would not be happy my self untill i got that insurance disk and cert in my hand

(iii) the motor tax office will give you your new tax disk on the spot as long as you have VRC, their form filled out, and money. you will have to back pay the tax unless you have a cert the gaurds stating car was off the road. ie, if you were to go into today to pay, and the tax expired at the end of june, you will need to pay the tax from end of june till todays date then pay for the next 3/6/12 months (which ever you choose), if you have a cert from the guards, that back date will not apply.

then as 'mathepac' said, my first NCT is not for another 6 months yet so have not experienced that yet.

Rent a trailer and get the car up onto it, it's not allowed to legally move on the road without tax or insurance.

Book an NCT and throw 'er in, it's money well spent to see what's wrong with the car if it happens to fail. Worst scenario is you fail, simple as.

If and when it passes, tax it and then insure it, then live a long and happy motoring life :]

You can tax an uninsured car and you can NCT an untaxed and uninsured car.
