What is it that's holding back the paid apps? I assume it's for the same reason that Google Checkout is not available in Ireland?

I'm actually surprised there isn't a bigger outcry about this. Getting a bit ridiculous at this stage.

And wtf is the hold up with the paid market in Ireland? I don't understand it.

No one does. It's been asked so many times yet as far as I know there hasn't even been a real theory put forward, never mind an actual answer from Google. We're just hoping for the best and waiting for Google to get their finger out!:(

What do you mean about Google Checkout not being in Ireland? I know several people who use it.

Paid apps aren't available without workarounds such as Market Access. However as the man says once you've got access to the paid apps, the checkout option works fine from Ireland.

You can purchase things using google checkout from ireland but, unless I'm very much mistaken, you can't sell.

Merchant accounts, or however they're called, aren't available here. And without being able to do that, you can't sell apps in the market.

right, wasn't aware of that. I assumed we were talking from a consumer's perspective.

The paid app store is only in 7 or 8 countries so it is a bit stupid alright.
I really cant see Android catching up with Apple unless the market is made universally available.

    +1

Developers aren't going make apps for it unless they can bloody well sell them. Get the fukcing finger out google. How come apple can make a feckin market place with no problem and you cant??

Here is a link to a workaround to buy apps from Ireland.

    http://www.androidtapp.com/how-to-buy-android-apps-in-countries-that-dont-support-paids-apps/

and a dev opens his books to show how much money he is making from the market.

    Cheers

    Sweet.

Still though... considering it was one of the most ubiquitous android apps around it's not a huge amount.

If anyone wants to get started on an Android app:

No Mac, dev kits, licenses, or other Apple BS required :)

Sorry skimmed the thread a little.

The reason the above and more arnt available in ireland is due to large amounts of red tape and whinging pretty much.

The irish government very regularly buckles from industry pressure in a number of areas.

The block seems to be very much a case that google are ready to launch, but are being held back.

I could imagine the likes of eircom and the mobile networks having a huge problem with google voice.

The same with the likes of paid market and checkout etc.

Funny considering google just announced 200 new jobs here, they might start turning the screw in the powers that be top drop some of the barriers.
