This was shown on RTE on Thursday 12th August; well worth a watch if you missed it.
Once again the BLE/AAI look silly.

Yeh more farcical happenings. Wasnt even aware of that particular incident until I watched this.

Great documentary though. A great athlete Catherina was. A shame we couldnt see her go for gold in the marathon in Sydney!

Something along the lines of: Catherina wanted to compete in the 1998 World Half Marathon Championships and she was very confident of getting the gold but the BLE said that she couldnt compete as they were not sending a team to it. Catherina then asked could she go on her own and travel at her own expense (which is allowed according to the IAAF) but the muppets at the BLE blocked her attempt to do that. Her revenge was running a time a week after the championships that would have won gold.

Maybe somebody can give a more detailed explanation as to what happened.

You summed it up pretty well, what an athlete she was, pity she never won a world championship something she richly deserved

It was worse than that. I think they said they'd let her go (at her own expense) if she signed a contract to run in the national championships and the world XC championships. Now, considering she had moved over to road running and was arguably the world's top road runner at the time, you'd think they might have stopped to ponder "oh, I wonder what her training / racing schedule is like for the next year", but then that would have been in the best interest of the athlete.

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.
