Iwebkit for making a webtext program

    I want to use my webtexts on my phone but i don't like the sound of ads in eirtext and i dont feel like paying for pro.

    I could use cabbage in safari but I would like to use an app instead as the web interface is a bit basic.

    If I build a design that looks like the iphone UI (i have reasonable html/css/photoshop) and integrate this form (with absolute URLs for scripts on cabbagetexter.com and the number and password filled in [the red bits] )
    <body><form action=http://cabbagetexter.com/web/d.php method=get>
    <input type=hidden name=u value=number>
    <input type=hidden name=p value=password>
    <input type=hidden name=s value=v>
    <br>To<br><input type=text name=d><br>
    <textarea name=m rows=5 cols=20></textarea>
    <input type=submit value=Send><br><a href=http://cabbagetexter.com/web/admin.php?u=number
    &p=password&s=v>Account options</a><br>

    Could I store this page locally on the phone (don't want the page with the password in the URL to be on the open internet), launch it like an app and use it for my webtexts?

    Is there really a need for this
    No
    Stop this
    There is another solution
    All will be revieled to the smart few
    Look for clues
    Look for an answer
    Obviously there is a better solution
    Until then, you will just have to make do with ads
    So there

    I'm not interested in warezed apps for this if thats the solution the smart few have. The author of Eirtext JELLYSMS has mentioned on this board that he monitors piracy and I don't wouldn't want to use a cracked app to send my vodafone login details in plaintext through a server belonging to a guy I steal from :D (He used to post pirates personal details on his blog)

    The main point of this exercise would be to be able to tell people I made an app (albeit a webapp but most wont know the difference :cool:). I also like the idea of having complete control over the interface.

    I havent used iwebkit yet so i dont know if i'll even bother with this project - I'm not sure if it can package it as an app file and store the code I'm borrowing from cabbagetexter.com on the phone so that I don't have to publish my login details except to cabbagetexter.com

    If I get it working, I would knock together a few skins and a generator to allow anybody to make their own version of the code above & combine it with the css i write to make it pretty and hopefully package in a convenient format, I think this would be popular enough... of course this would all have to be with sam vimes (the cabbage dev)'s approval

    jesus man,..it's €2.79 or something for eirtext pro isn't it?
    Are you seriously gonna tell me that you're looking for a way to avoid paying for this? imo it's well worth the money

    I don't store anyone's login details - pirate or not.

    Why stop there? Why don't you build your own mobile network, so that way you could give yourself free texts AND calls no matter what and you can steal every app that you like!

    OMG. Can't believe I didn't think of this before!! Genius!

    He's writing an app from scratch to avoid paying for an app called Eirtext Pro, that he would have pirated if it weren't for his misconception that the developer (Vinny) was somehow storing his details on his server and he might be caught pirating it.

    That would be the gist of it.

    Apologies to vinnycoyne, I meant fbradyirl the developer of Jellysms.

    My code isn't for stopping it. It's for detecting when the app is being run illegally. In this case, I turn the app into a 'Lite' version with adverts etc as I've said previously.
    fbradyirl wrote: »
    FYI, if you are thinking of pirating apps, just remember that it is extremely easy for developers to detect this and they could take any passwords, or private info you use in the app very easily.

    So I would think twice about going near these illegal free apps...

    edit: I see where you deleted your blog entry of pirate users phonenumbers and device ids

    Fbradyirl, please tell me what I would be stealing?

    Really? Why were you looking? Were you afraid your details might show up?

    BTW, I didn't delete it. I just made it private so it's invite only... http://twitter.com/jellysmspirates

    But aaaanyway :D

    If you want to use my API you'd be better off using the main script rather than the web based one. Have your app interface with:

    http://cabbagetexter.com/send.php?u=PHONE_NUMBER&p=PASSWORD&s=v&d=RECIPIENT_NUMBER&m=MESSAGE

    for the s= parameter its v for vodafone, o for o2, m for meteor, t for three and e for eircom.

    Or you can get the scripts yourself here: http://cabbagetexter.com/source.php and put them on your own website.

    The benefit of doing the processing server side is that it keeps data transfer down, it just makes the request and gets back the number of message the user has left but then of course the login details are sent through the server.

    Vinny or fradyirl, how much data do Eirtext and JellySMS transfer when sending a text do you know? Are they suitable for use without a data package and abroad? I was looking into a way of making the requests without getting the whole few 100kb worth of HTML response but I didn't get too far with J2ME. Did you find a way to do it?

    O2 requests are fairly large as their site is a bit of a pig. Three.ie is like a blip in comparision (and thus way faster). I'm not sure about the rest I haven't really measured to be honest.

    Yeah three is very basic. It's not even done through https afair. So the app does make normal requests and get the entire page back after each request, so each text uses about 100KB or more?

    Dude,

    I am only getting an iPhone tomorrow and look forward to tinkering with it. I made this thrad to see if people thought my idea would work.

    While I was saving for the phone I used to read this board for ideas of what apps and accessories are good etc.. and read about your blog in the "do you pirate apps" thread. I was interested as I was sure it would be illegal under data protection legislation so it stuck with me to an extent (obviously not as well as i thought seeing as i accused the wrong man).

    How exactly would I confuse jellysms and eirtext if i was a user of one or other i don't really know. I used cabbage mobile by sam vimes on my previous phone which supported java apps and i came up with this idea when i found out there was no free webtext avalable except for the cabbage web interface. Because the interface is for all phones, it is quite basic so i thought I would spruce it up as both a personal project and to give something back to the cabbage community as a thank you for a free app.

    Fair enough. Best of luck with the project.

    I have used cabbage mobile abroad on vodafone as their 99c for 50 mb per day deal still applies when roaming. I have now signed up to VF 360 to get 100mb for 39c but i amnt sure if it works abroad.

    Obviously at these prices its only worthwhile if you want to send a few texts or if you want to do other things online e.g. check emails/a bit of browsing

    Oh and thanks for understanding what I meant by this thread and not calling me cheap/ a thief :D
