    Hi,
I have a big problem with my laptop and any ideas/help would be much appreciated...

I have a Philips X54 laptop running windows 7 for the last 10months:

    Centrino Duo T2300,
    2 gig ram,
    100gb HD,
    Nvidia GEforce GO7400,
    Windows 7 (upgraded from XP).

Yesterday, out of the blue, the screen went black. I re-booted the laptop. The "starting windows " screen appears, the 4 coloured balls align to form a window as normal, and then the screen goes black and doesn't progress to logon screen. The same happens each time...

When I say the screen goes black..its not like the screen has no power, it is black, but has an illuminated background....so screen is not the issue.

    I have tried:
    startup repair thru windows,
    W7 repair via repair disc,
    removal/re-instillation of graphic driver,
Various restore points from before issue,
full system restore from backup drive,
    memory scan/check,

    All no good....

I can boot in safe mode no issues. Device manager shows no conflicts/issues.

Please feel free to leave suggestions...

    Thanks,
    mick.

when you say running windows the last 10 months is that on top of time you may have already owned the laptop?

If its still under warranty get in touch with Phillips Support right away.

My W7 build did something similarly a few weeks ago but it was a slightly different issue: I was installing a new Southbridge driver when the install crashed - leaving me with a fcuked up Southbridge and hence no Peripherals, no Mouse, no Keyboard, but I could still see the desktop. Didn't work in safe mode either, but a disc-based restore did in fact help there :/

Is there any way in Safe Mode that you can install Logmein and then try to access the machine remotely when its started normally? Other than that, just install the entire set of drivers again. Failing even that: complete reformat.

    Overheal, thx for the reply...

I have been running W7 on the laptop for the last 10 months with no issues at all.

When I upgraded to W7 from XP, I made a complete restore file which I sucessfully reloaded yesterday, although the black screen still exists.

    Regards,
    Mick.
