    Hi

I have a Panasonic V10 TV which has a built in Cable tuner and I can tune in all the UPC Digital channels they are all encrypted bar a couple like RTE1, if I took out a digital subscription with UPC and rather having a seperate box under the TV I was wondering if there was a cam that I could fit into the cam slot on my TV which would allow me to insert the UPC card to watch all the channels on my subscription?

    thanks

It might work, but it against the UPC Terms & Conditions.

Also, while it might be able to work, the EPG most likely would not work..

Yep unfortunately against T&C. If I plug the cable directly to my tv and scan the epg displays all the correct info but 99% of the channels are scrambled....shame. If you knew what CAM you'd be set.

actually found some answers on the HTPC forums, you could get a cam that works problem is that the UPC card is tied to the UPC box you would need to know the box key, or for UPC to start supplying cams for Cable enabled TV's, I don't see this happening, pity as a lot of sets come with cable tuners :(

UPC should unscramble the channels with which they are their analogue equivalent. Most people have digital TV's these days and it would allow them to slowly turn off their analogue network while still maintaining a distinct advantage over sky.

It's illegal under Irish law to disseminate information how to access payTv in an unauthorised fashion and it's against UPC's T&C to use their card in anything other than the supplied box.

If you want direct Digital TV on a TV set or HTPC or such, you need FTA satellite card/TV with Dish, or Freeview via aerial from Wales or N.I. or Saorview from November, i.e. Free TV not pay TV.

There's no impropriety in any of the posts on the thread it's legitimate to discuss the merits or otherwise if UPC were to allow customers this option.

I think they should. Since getting a new LCD TV on Sunday I'm now having the problem where the UPC remote doesn't work when the TV is on.

Do you have a specific reference for that?

It will not work each card is matched to a specific decoder. same reason your card will not work in another UPC decoder.

It's quite legitimate to discuss if UPC should offer the option.

But It's not legitimate to discuss how to do it without UPC permission and you need explicit UPC permission.

The references are on the Irish Statutes and T&C on UPC's web site.

We can argue all day that UPC should allow it and help customers. UPC do read the forums. That's perfectly permissible.

They did bring rule in some countries to allow 3rd party cams in PCs and TVs, but two developments that UPC will likely adopt make this only workable for short term.
    1) Switched Video (look it up at Cable Labs or Wikipedia)
    2) Cable Modem enhanced Interactive and security

So UPC is very unlikely to accommodate user CAMs (PC cable cards and IDTV viewing cards).

Also read the Cable & Digital TV forums and Cable & MMDS & IPTV forums charters.

I'm not making stuff up or telling people what to do. No-one is anonymous. I'm just trying to be informative.

Please, elucidate on these Irish statutes that preclude illegitimate dissemination of technical information on cable TV networks - as otherwise I suspect you're talking about censorship...

    Censorship on the internet? NEVER!!!!

There's not discussing something on a forum for fear of retribution from a private organisation - that's not censorship - that's boards covering its ass, but to justisfy not discussing something through law, is censorship.

Watty - do share these Irish laws you refer to
