After playing through most of the total war series I'm looking for a new stragey game, real time or turn based. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Well starcraft 2 really is excellent and widely regarded the best of the bunch.
Apart from that i suggest the Dawn of War series and Company of Heroes.
Im sure of the rts vets on here can offer more suggestions.

Civilization 4, I'm still playing this constantly after 5 years. Civ 5 is out next month mind, but 4 is still great.

If you play online, there is Company of Heroes Online. It's free2play iirc

Warhammer: Dark Omen is now abandonware and free to download.

    Brilliant game!

    Victoria 2

Historical strategy with a very steep learning curve, more in dept than TW series, though it doesn't have the battles

I would second the recommendation of Company of Heroes as a great RTS.

If the grand sweep of Total War enthralled you why not try 'Hearts Of Iron'. Its a very deep strategy game based on WWII.
Premise is you start in 1935 as a major nation and have to lead your nation into WWII and hopefully out of it intact. It seems to be a strategy and research game. Options like reseaching Jet Fighters early as Germany are expensive (as it against actual fact but still possible) but could tunr the tide in the mid 1940s...............

Would about any of the UFO games? The trilogy (Aftermath, AfterShock, Afterlight) should be easy to pick up as a boxed set. Maybe a nice change of pace after M:TW 2, E:TW, N:TW

The Hearts of Iron series are good, although the latest one, Hearts of Iron 3 was a bit of a misfire. There's an offshoot game based on Hearts of Iron 2 called Arsenal of Democracy which is supposed to be good.

The Galactic Civilizations series have always received good reviews.
The Space Empires series is a similar space 4x type but the AI is exceedingly stupid, very good against human opponents though.

You can't beat the original UFO: Enemy Unknown (XCOM 1), I believe it's abandonware, but you can pick it up for under €5 on GOG.

There's the Company of Heroes/ Dawn of War games.

Lots of good games out there, you need to figure out what you like. Strategy is too broad a category.

Company of Heroes - will pick up for a song

Company of Heroes online - in beta but pratically finished, can't recommend them highly enough

Civilization V perhaps, see the other thread... It's getting incredible reviews and I for one think it's by far the best!

DOW 2 is simply amazing especially if you're not a fan of base building and more into unit micro and ambush tactics.

Lack of base building was what threw me off DoW2.. but, I admit, it's not the game itself, it's just me not liking that style of RTS gameplay :)

I'd of course highly recommend Company of Heroes, imho the best RTS of ... hmm... decade :) DoW was based on the same mechanics and, in contrary to DoW2, had base building and pretty good campaign. Apart from those, World in Conflict and most recent R.U.S.E are definitely worth checking out (although RUSE is much better in skirmish mode as the campaign is poor). If one likes sci-fi strategies, Sins of The Solar Empire is supposed to be very good Homeworld follower... never played it myself tho

There's also pretty nice game for all that like Total War and are into fantasy based rpgs. King Arthur: The Role-playing Wargame (as the full title goes) was not widely advertised and went very quietly under the radar - too quietly... it definitely deserves more attention. It combines turned based map gameplay with economy and text-based adventures/quests, and real-time battles with knights, archers, magic spells and monsters. And it's definitely not easy

Age of empire 3 and the expansions are great.

I would recommend checking out Battle for Wesnoth. It's a turned-based open source strategy game that I found to be quite good fun when I played it.
