New Engine for Opel Astra SXI 3 Door sports hatch (1.4). How much?

Does anyone know how much a new engine would cost for an Opel Astra 3 door sports hatch SXI.

My engine died (mechanic says there was no oil left in the engine, but it was definitely okay for oil level, no light came on or any strange feel or noises etc so something went wrong along the line)…

Anyway, getting a quote of €2,000, does that sound right?

How did the cars engine breakdown on you.
Very pricey, have had an engine changed a few years ago for €500
    from a local indy garage.
    I'd shop around price wise.

It just died while driving, rattled and went. Said that there was no oil in the engine and was driving with no oil (but that was not the case) so must have been faulty.

What car was the engine in that you get changed and which county/mechanic?

Im a little confused !!! Why would your mechanic tell you it had no oil in it if that wasn't the case? When was the last time you checked the level in it?

Could have been a problem with the oil pickup or pump. I don't think either the €2000 or the €500 figures are for new engines, you need to find out exactly what you're getting for that money.

    +1

Sounds like oil starvation to me too.

@ OP, Oil starvation means there is plenty of oil in the engine, but its not being pumped around the engine due to the pick-up filter being blocked or a faulty oil pump.

Coolant pipe burst in my 1.7 cdti last year, no warning light, nothing...car just died on the motorway. Opel deciding to drop the engine temperature gauge in the new Astra (2004-2009) ended up costing me a fortune.

Was quoted €3000 by Opel (Boyne Valley) for a new engine, but got a reconditioned one up north for about €1500.

    RE: Whippet.

Exactly what I thought and told the mechanic, I filled the engine oil not long ago and always carry oil with me in the car. No light came on, the engine sounded fine, got a strange smell (like gas almost) and then the car lost power, I'm no expert but would know if the car was short on oil.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies, looks like I will have to bite the bullet and pay up...

    What year is the astra?

"What car was the engine in that you get changed and which county/mechanic?"

The car i had at the time was a 01 Fiat Punto, dreaded headgasket
    went in it.
The mechanic was a retired chap, he sourced a fitted a replacement
engine for €500, had it done in 3 days. Drove the car for a year then
sold it on no problems. I'll do my best to find he's number and see if he's
    still working.
