Two weeks ago I taxed my car through my local coco by dropping the form in their letterbox.

Money was taken from my card, but no tax disk arrived.

I phoned them only to be told that it must have been lost in the post, and that I will have to fill out a form and get it stamped by the Garda for a replacement. I told them I dont need a replacement, just the original which I didn't lose. I also asked if they had a certificate of postage which they said no. Finally I asked for the persons name, which he replied and hung up...

    opinions please

"Welcome to the public service. How may we give you the run around?"

I'm afraid AFAIK there is little you can do other than get the form and get it stamped.

At least if you get a ticket or get stopped by the Gardaí you will have a genuine excuse

That was taking a little risk. Next time either go in and get your disc there and then, or renew your tax online and print out the proof that you have paid and keep it with you in the car at all times...

I renewed tax online for one of mine last Friday morning and the new disc arrived in the post this (Monday) morning!

Tax discs are sent in normal post, so it's a pain, but it does happen sometimes. They can get lost from Shannon too but at least as unkel says you have proof of having paid.

Renewing it online always seems to get the disc here very quickly.

I renewed mine online and it never arrived. However when I told them this after a few weeks of waiting they just sent me out (another) one.

I'd advise carrying the credit card statement with you to present to the Gardaí should the need arise, and as others have said, don't park on a public road.

i know it's a little late for you OP but i have to agree that anyone who does have a credit card should go the online route, as long as you have your renewal form and insurance policy number to hand it takes no more that 5 minutes......i've done it 4 or 5 times now and the disk has never taken more than a week....also, even if it does get delayed and lost, you can print the confirmation page as proof that your car is taxed in case you do get pull over

I did pay via cc. But had to use the off the road form as I was was not using it all summer. I have never had a problem before, just an issue with so called civil servants attitude.

The garda cars have reg readers that can tell if taxed or not, but the problem remains, why should I fork out another €6 for a replacement disc?
Technically it would not be a replacement disc as it is not replacing one that i lost.....

You shouldn't have to pay, just have the inconvenience of getting the garda stamp. That's how it was when I worked in a MTO, but can't guarantee it's still same ;)

I love the way I can now tax my car online, and still get penalised for buying 6 months tax instead of 12. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside my temples.

I wonder has anyone done a charge-back with their credit card for not getting a disc? :pac:

Yeah I was gonna suggest this, and you can also take a printout with you stating that you have paid...... in case there is a mix up in the post... obviously not a proper tax disc, but it would be a thick guard (again, not saying that a lot of them arent thick either) that would do you for non display of tax when you show him that you have actually paid. tbh, I wouldnt feel comfortable about going out on the road without the actual disc, as the only time you ever see the guards is when your tax is out. You are then gambling with the assumption that they will show common sense on seeing that you have already paid, but this isnt necessarily the norm.

    Drama over.

I decided to cherrypick my battles.

Went and got the form stamped and got replacement without paying the €6.

However, if the €6 was asked for......

I also let them them know of the credit card charge back option I had which they accepted.

As for the phone hang up civil servant, I believe in karma:)
