first year is general enough modules - we did introduction to spatial planning, lanscape and settlememt, physics and chemistry, sociology and government, biology, economics, intro to the design process, intro to env management, a project module and transferable skills

if you specialise into planning in 2nd year you would do - Urban and Regional Development, Rural Planning, Transport and Communications, Property Development, Planning Techniques, Environmental Impact Assessment

other modules: env soc and pol, rural planning, urban design, planning theory

    some projects we did

Projects: Area Action Plan for Richmond Road, Drumcondra, Dublin.
Local Area Plan for Portarlington, Co Laois.
Environmental Impact Assessment of Portmarnock Village.
Strategic Development Zone project for Clonburris/ Balgaddy.

I don't want to put the frighteners on you but I would try and transfer out! It's an interesting course but 2nd and 3rd year are woefully underused (we had 14 hour week in 2nd year!) and in 4th year everything is crammed into the 3 months before christmas. The lecturers are good - professionals who have tonnes of experience and make most lectures really interesting.

But career prospects are ridiculously crap at the minute. One person in my year of forty actually got a planning/environmental related job and I know loads more who did the masters and are completely lost as to what to do next. There are no planning jobs in Ireland/UK at the minute particularly for graduates with little/no experience. Its not something that will change in a few years either - with the oversupply in offices & housing, development & therefore planning is going to be on the backfoot for the next decade (imao). So if it was me....I would look at transferring out...i loved the course but i wish i had never done it. A complete waste of my time.
