Westport Sea2Summit Saturday 13th November

New multi-sport race including run up Croagh Patrick the pilgrim's way.

Entry price is good (45 euro) but the package deal including the hotel is a pretty darn pricey 180/200 per person (based on two sharing) for 2 nights. Well maybe it's not too bad but it's not bargain basement. Cheaper if you only want to stay one night.

Reckon I'll go with the B&B option!

    The S2S Supreme course
    · The event begins at the Westport Plaza & Castlecourt Hotel Resort.

Stage 1 Participants will run up Distillery Road on to the new Greenway and follow the Greenway to Westport Quay. (4.5km)

Stage 2 The 1st Transition Point is at Roman Island there you change on to your bike and follow the road out via the coast to Murrisk (8k) to Croagh Patrick car park. ( Transition 2)

Stage 3 Changing shoes again to climb Croagh Patrick (5k) which is widely known and we are using the most used side for the race. At the top we urge that you take care on the descent as the loose shale is dangerous and numerous accidents have occurred there in the past.

Stage 4 Returning to Croagh Patrick Car Park to pick up your bike and take on the rolling hills. Taking the main road to Louisburgh turning at Kilsallagh for Drummin where the steep climb of the Maum awaits you; recommended gearing on your bike is 39x27 its 25% in places, through Drummin village and on to Liscarney where it’s all downhill back to Roman Island transition point.

Stage 5 The last section could be the hardest, with a 4 km run to include an obstacle course and sea run, returning to Westport Town via the Greenway, finishing at the Fairgreen overlooking the Mall River.

    The S2S Spirit Route
The S2S Spirit Route is similar with the same first run and bike but the hike up Croagh Patrick only goes as far as the ridge (3k) and then descends to the car park leaving out the torches Cone. The Maum Hill Cycle is also reduced to 8km.

What are the distances breakdown for S2S

    The S2S Supreme
    Race Format
    4.5k run
    8k cycle
    5k Mountain run (Croagh Patrick)
    35k cycle hilly cycle
4k run with obstacle course and sea run
    Total distance 56.5kms

    The S2S Spirit
    Race Format
    4.5k run
    8k cycle
    3k Mountain run (Croagh Patrick)
    8k cycle
4k run with obstacle course and sea run
    Total distance 27.5kms

More Croagh Patrick running ......................... shur how could that not tempt everyone back!

Should be a great race I reckon and course design is by none other than Padraig Marrey of GF 2010 winning fame

I'd like to do the shorter one, but it says it's for new entrants to the adventure race scene.. i'm not sure i could face the long one though after this weekend?

I saw a poster for this race on the Gaelforce Route. I remember thinking it was the worst possible location for the advertisement as everyone was probably swearing off ARs for life at that point! I know I was.

id consider it if the phrase "sea run" was explained... allergic to water deeper than a few inches...

No further elaboration on sea run here, though.

yeah i saw the posters round westport whilst waiting for a mate to finish gaelforce so i looked it up when i got home i do a lot of hillwalking ( not running though ) and cycling and a fair bit of running but i can walk up croagh patrick from the car park in a reasonably quick time so if i got the legs in order i could half run half walk it...
but thats getting off the point i presume its a run across shallow water but until i get it clarified i dunno if im gonna enter.. just sent them an e-mail we'll see what comes back

    Hi guys,

We have one twin and two double rooms available for the Sea to Summit Weekend. Our house is just two miles outside Westport town on the Leenane road. The boss of the house is a Gaelforce survivor and also taking part in Sea to Summit.;)

The first scrambled eggs, beans and toast were served just after 4am Gaelforce morning so whatever your start time, you wont leave the house on an empty stomach and we will also drop you to the starting line. A three course house dinner will be served on the Friday evening and can also be served early Saturday evening so you have plenty of time to head into Westport town for a well deserved drink or three! We can email a dinner menu on request.

If you want a relaxed stay with fellow sea to summiters, why not make a weekend of it; just send us an email at hillsiderest@hotmail.com
Prices Two nights bed & breakfast - €60 euro per person
Two night bed & breakfast and 1 dinner €80 euro per person
    Dinner €20 per person

We look forward to hearing from you

rough diamond at the weekend had an obstacle course in the middle after a steeplechase and 13k on the bike it was testing but not tough dunno what it would be like doing one after running cycling climbing croagh patrick and cyling again and having to run after it any more than a few tyres and id probably pack it in.. and there is the potential for injury as i found out on saturday

    from sea to summit facebook

the sea run in the S2S race is only a short 100m dash across a shore line the water depth will be no more than 2feet deep at most. Padraig course designer

so thats that clarified then very tempted now

This looks like a tough one. Comparing this to GF the run up CP is a lot longer, still taking in the cone of course. The climb of the Maum is very hard. I've done it three times and twice I had to get off the bike and lie down at the top! Twice as hard as the GF climb over Sheaffrey IMO. Don't know what to make of the obstacle course. Also the weather in November could go either way. Did GF and will attempt Achill roar expert. I'll think about this then.

Sounds tempting. Must try and tackle Croagh Patrick first. I'm ashamed to say I've never climbed it nevermind run it......:o

We'd never let ya on it ya big Galway mucker :)

I would use the words run very lightly, lot easier said that done, when you hit the sleepered steps near the statue at the bottom you will begin to wonder how the hell you are going to get up the rest of it! :)

I think majority will probably run to the bottom of the peak of the reek, but on the peak outside of striding its walk.

Might bring you up to the carpark some day so u can run it ;) I will wait in the car :D

are any of the experienced A-Racers thinking of doing the shorter version? is it a cop out?

i just figure it's going to be very cold, and i'm not sure i could face the longer one.. but i dont want to be the only loser chosing the easier option either!

It will be a hard call that, weather at that time of year could be chronic bad, so the reek will be no fun, but if it isn't I will do the full.
The cycle is well tasty and on a nice narrow road, similar to Sheeffry, its actually off that road there, long drag, I intend to get out on it in the next few weeks so I will see what its like.

Come on now girls, I carried my mountain bike up as far as the cone in February years ago the morning after a session when I was still half cut (I was a lot fitter then). It was snow from then on so how bad could it be in November?

Came down in 10 minutes on the bike afterwards

Sometimes I get curious as to why people have the names they have on boards ... in your case in all makes sense :)
I lose the nerve on steep hills never mind something like the reek.

If it had to be done it would be done but not at a storming pace.

It was actually a lot easier to climb the cone with the snow on it. It was over a foot thick so when you stood on the snow it compacted and you got a solid footing and didn't really feel the stones underneath.

Here's hoping it's snowing up there in November :D:D

despite my knees protestations...and against my good sense, ive signed up for this... the short one i think the top of the reek in november will not be a fun place to be.. or out on the maum hill either... but since im suffering from post achill roar blues ive decided to give this a lash to keep me honest for another while.. and because theres a baby coming in december and i mightnt see the light of day until late next year..

    Hi there,

I'm looking for a bit of advice on the Sea2Summit challenge. I'm half considering doing it (the Spirit / Novice category). I'd be a newbie when it comes to Adventure Racing, but I have done a fair bit of distance road running. 10km's in the region of ~ 48mins and I completed my 1st Half Marathon in Galway (Galway Bay HM) there two weeks ago on the 2nd of Oct, coming in at 01:50:12.

I think I would have the fitness for it (obviously if I got into training for it now, having not done much since the half, bar some football) but I'd be lacking experience for the cycle & mountain run. I used to do a fair bit of cycling but only as a mode of transport really, but I would be confident on a bike, I did some adventure mountain biking while travelling in the last couple of years. I have a MTB which I would need to get 'serviced' and probably put a set of slicks on to help the speed (?).

So I guess I'm just wondering if people think I could be ready for this. Obviously I'd need to get 'on my bike' and get some solid cycle training in, and perhaps climb the reek at least once (ashamed to say I've never been up it and I live within view of it).

Also, what are the essentials I would need for doing it, would I get away with runners (asics, which I have) or would I be much better of getting trail shoes?

    Thanks for any advice!

If yo go to their facebook page Padraig Marry has given some very good training advice. I think you should go for the supreem myself! I am at a lower level of fitness that you and I am doing the supreem!! Gaol to finish time not important.

Good luck with whatever you decide!"

This also im my first event, id have a pretty good fitness level,gym/ football, road running and in the past few weeks gettin out on the bike. Completed the 10k run in 43min last week. This wasnt in a race or anything just training by myself.

I entered the sea 2summit for the supreme at intermed level. my aim is like that just to get through it. hav never climbin the reek either but thats my goal this weekend and the following weekend i plan on doing the longer part of the cycle, just so ive some idea of wot to expect.

I think tho i need to invest in proper pair of trek running shoes for the climb. but maybe u'd get away with runners. I'll no after this weekend!!!

Done the cycle last week, the climb is so so tough,i recommend cycling it at least once, its just false top after false top after false top,had ran some of the reek that day as well,i thought my to legs were gonna drop of at the top of the maun,I my opinion harder than any part of GF.what i liked abouf GF was when i got to the reek i new i was nearly home where as with this the reek is just the start, its my third event and am really looking forward to it,climbed the reek last night really miss judged my timing and ended up running from the shoulder down in the dark (Stupid i no) but still managed 1h 7min,(thats 1h 7 Min of torture tho):(,let us no bout any training ideas or runs,1 month to go:)

I did the Reek yesterday for the first time since March and for the 5th time ever. Made it to the top in 53 mins and 30 minutes down. Legs sore today! Saw a few people who look like they were training for S2S. They got on bikes after the mountain I on the other hand got into the car!!! Hoping to try the cycle this day week and then decide between Supreem and spirit!

does anyone reckon itd be possible to leave stuff in the second transition (croagh patrick )area pre-race.. ie jacket spare runners ( dry ones just in case ) or whatever .. a relation thats doing the long race was asking me .. i said as it was an adventure race that i doubted it and he'd probably have to carry whatever he thought he needed.. but that id check it out anyway
thankfully im only doing the short one so wont need much..
did a profile of the route on walkjogrun and ruled it out when i saw the hill

    How did you get on?

It was my 1st time ever climbing it, so i didnt no what to expect. made it up in 50min and down 27min. wasnt sure if that was a good time or not but i think its not bad. dont think there's many area's on the way up that you can jog.

plan on doing the cycle next weekend, i'll start at the car park and do the full circle. not looking forward to the hill but it has to be done. the following weekend would plan on doing the climb and cycle.

Or would anyone think i should do the climb and go straight into the cycle next weekend??

not many weekends left, i suppose it depends how close to westport you are, in terms of doing a combined session, ie climb then cycle or whatever combination you may be planning id say do it next weekend or the one after.. wouldnt do a big session the weekend before personally..
im hoping to cycle out from westport to c.p. then climb to the ridge and cycle back and hopefully run the 4k depends on the form and the weather.. hoping to do that on the 30th or 31st, i figure the next weekend is getting to close to the race so itl give me time to recover from any little strains or stiffness..
