Big 5 Law Firms

    Hi everyone,

I'm a final year undergraduate and I've completed a couple of internships this summer in Big 5 law firms.

I'm not sure whether I made a good enough impression to secure an offer of a traineeship; even if I have, I'll be applying to all of the Big 5 firms and selected other firms.

Could anyone tell me how the Big 5 firms are doing at the moment? More specifically, are any of them coping particularly well with the difficult legal environment at the moment, and are any of them struggling more than the others?

I'd be really interested to hear anyone's insight, and particularly those who are working within the firms, as a trainee or otherwise.

    Thanks.

They seem to be doing pretty well. Only Mason, Hayes and Curran of the big law firms publicise their financial results as far as I know, so its hard to say precisely. Some firms seemed to be hiring more numbers then others last year - but whether thats an accurate indication of how a firm is doing is hard to say, other factors like over hiring other years could be a major factor there for example.

Are you applying to the English firms too?

Big firms as always are on the whole doing better than small firms - all the usual reasons re mix of business etc.

Arsenal - I would be careful about suggesting that any firm is in trouble. Could be defamatory.

S/he didn't suggest anything of the sort.

You just need a degree to apply for training contracts in the UK - you will still have to do the LPC (and possibly some modules on the GDL depending on what options were taken during your law degree, or if you don't have a law degree you definitely need to do the GDL) but you can apply for TC's before doing either of these, and if your lucky, the firm will pay for them too.

WOW!!! i did not know that! how irritating, I always seem to not know the important stuff that could potentially lead me to career PROGRESSION for once rather than just sitting around here trying to get a trainee ship and doing a masters so as to not be totally bored with my life at the moment!
Thanks! Feeling a bit down with my situation at the moment never mind me ha!
