What do wasp stings feel like?

    I'm petrified of wasps.

I'd be classed by a lot of people as very tough and more or less fearless to the point of being an idiot sometimes. However, despite my lack of fear in dangerous situations, I turn into a fcuking pansy when confronted by a wasp. They are evil, nasty looking, aggressive little bastards, and there appears to me to be thousands of the fcukers around in the last couple of days looking for an innocent person to sting. When one comes near me, I run, irrespective of what I'm doing at the time - holding a dog, dog is thrown either at the wasp or onto the floor to sort himself out, holding the burd's hand, bye bye burd, if there's one on the bus, I get off the bus.

But, I've never actually been stung by a wasp (or a bee, but I don't mind them). Is it really that bad? I can't help but feel that I should just man the fcuk up, but it's the fear of the unfamiliar I think that makes it so bad. I can block a punch, but not a wasp sting you know?

Anyone else out there as afraid of those yellow bastards as I am? Can anyone comment on the level/type of pain caused by a wasp sting?

Yes, many years ago as an innocent child. The bastard stung me on the neck. I dont remember any pain just a little numbness in a small area. A bit of vineger sorted that out though.

The pain is not so bad.
Not nearly as bad as stubbing your toe for example but it does last a bit longer and get kinda itchy.

Though you also may be allergic to it all then its probably pretty bad.

    Pain is subjective, OP.

One man's wasp sting is another man's paper cut.

If you can learn to separate the emotional reaction, wasp stings aren't actually all that sore at all. A burning sensation to start, followed by an itchiness akin to sunburn.

Not nearly half as bad as a jellyfish sting

I'm allergic to wasps and so the sting hurts like an absolute bástard!
The only thing that annoys me about wasps is that they aren't big enough for me to see the pain I want to inflict on them

    Bit of a prick?

Oh and panicking tends to irritate/frighten, them making it much more likely they'll sting.

Maintain a Zen-like calm and the wasp will soon lose interest, unless you've just recently peeled an orange or drinking a bottle of Fanta, which you could use to trap the wasp.

Build up a nice collection and you could start a factory.

The worst pain you've ever experienced OP. I would advise you to close all windows and never leave the house again. It's for the best.

    Worse than childbirth

I had never been stung by one until recently, and yeah its sore alright. Vinegar will neutralise it and if you have a reaction (which I luckily didnt) call medical help asap.

Jeepers. Surprised that some people dont mind the sting. I've been stung a few times over the years and found it sore as hell.

Did you every get blood taken from a nurse who was thinking about what she was going to have for dinner or the pair of shoes she recently seen in a magazine?

    Well, kinda like that.

Apparently, it's nothing compared to pishing on an electric fence...

thanks for that analogy, that didn't happen too long ago, i thought the cnut was going to tear the muscle off my bone! i reckon i'll just have to stop bitching out and take it like a man. (i typed 'mna' instead of 'man' their, how ironic given the circumstances). i think i'm a bit worse this last while because my housemate is allergic and spent a night in st. vincents as a result of a wasp sting causing severe anaphylaxis last summer.

Never been stung by a wasp or bee... Fairly calm around them and I'd never hop out of my seat or anything cause after all, it's only a wasp.

I'm sure that would have some negative effect on nature somewhere.. Check my post again, I linked a massive wasp that would have me running to find my aerosol can and lighter.

Oh right. Maybe it isn't then, but the European ones are smaller than the other ones

I got stung by a wasp a few years ago, easily the worst pain i've ever experienced. Since then I've developed a massive fear for them, I nearly crashed a few times in the car because of them. I would rather be in a cage with tigers than wasps.

People say its not too bad but beleive me it is! A bee sting is not bad, there is a massive difference between the stings. Stay clear of them!

What is their actual point ? what do they do? I'd love to see them become extinct aswell, pity that colony collapse thats affecting bees doesn't happen to them

it's painful but after a few minutes you forget about it really

Here's a sting I got two weeks ago - took 24 hours to go from a normal foot to this, then a trip to the doctor a dose of steroids and antibiotics, a week and a half of not being able to walk properly and finally now back to normal. Everytime I see one now I grab the nearest weapon and dispatch the bugger to oblivion.

When I was 11, a wasp got into the bottle of 7-up I was drinking @ school, and when I took a drink of it, it stung me at the back of my mouth near my throat. It hurt like good goddamn, but I didn't make the connection between the sting and being unable to breathe properly until I was fcuked into the principals car and driven straight down to the doctors surgery. He had to give me a shot of something, I really can't remember what. Observations from that day:

    1. Nuns can drive like bank robbers when a student is going blue.
    2. A needle in the backside will somehow seem worse than the whole throat closing up bit at the time.
    3. I put the tops on bottles now. All the time. I even find some way of covering a beer bottle when I'm drinking outside.
    4. I fcuking hate wasps. Bees I can handle, they're big enough to be able to keep an eye on them. Wasps are evil.

pain is not the worst, I got stung in the neck about 2 weeks ago and feels like a pinch, goes a bit red and after an hour or 2 I dont feel nor see it.

    Over-rated imo

I was stung on the neck too, I thought it was strange place to get stung but seems other people have been too

All creatures have a purpose, they didnt just develop for no reason? didn't appear just to pi*s us off, they fill a niche, it's human interference that causes imbalances in the natural order of things.
Also I think they eat aphids which attack plants, but generally they eat insects

I sat on a wasp before, yep it hurt for a little bit but ive had worse pains!I felt more sorry for the little fecker seeing my ass coming for it :p It didnt get out alive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Long time since I was stung by one, as anniehoo says there are much worse pains.

If you want to know what a bee sting feels like then feel a Chinese woman's boob, a lot of theirs look like a little bee sting :D

It's a chemical burn under the skin, think the scene in "Fight Club", some people don't mind so much as they're naturally acidic bastards!

I'm also petrified of them OP, mainly now because there's a nest just above my bedroom window!! And no exterminator will come out because of the shape of my roof means the insurance won't cover them if they fall, or something utterly ridiculous like that.

What it means is that for the whole summer I've been unable to open my window, and my room is feckin' roasting...

Even when I'm lying in bed I can see the little buggers go in and out of the nest... Scary.

What benefit do wasps even provide to nature?
Like, bees produce honey and pollinate flowers, do wasps even polinate flowers?

my dog got stung by a wasp last year and as it was the first time ever i panicked a bit, brought her to the vet and they gave her an injection to take the swelling down, she looked a bit like elvis with the raised lip lol

the vet said that it normally goes down itself and you need to watch out for your dog actually swallowing a wasp. apparently its very common and really bad

i hate them myself, wasps are my spiders, terrified of them

Yeah most of the time they'll be fine but you have to keep an eye on them. Thankfully he didn't swallow it. He just felt very sorry for himself with his swollen lip. He won't be chasing them again in a hurry though :)

There is a scale for such things, I'd imagine the sting of a wasp is towards the bottom, probably similar to the Sweat Bee. The descriptions of what the various pains feel like are worth reading, although it probably doesn't have much scientific merit.

Zep. Our boxer got stung under her tongue last year and almost died too. Not sure if it was a wasp or bee but she needed steroids for a couple of weeks.
