I'm 18 and on 6 euro an hour. I am also heading to college next year.. I don't get more than 14 hours a week generally, so my wages never amount to much. I've been working there since last October, and took 3 months off in April to study for the Leaving. Any one know if I'm entitled to a bigger wage or do I just have to stick it out untill I eventually get a rise?

Looks like your on €6.06 until at least next Oct.

If you stay in that job, starting rate in supermarkets is about €9.

'From 1 July 2007 the national minimum wage for experienced adult employees and the sub-minimum rates for young people and certain trainees are as follows:

Employee Minimum hourly rate of pay % of minimum wage
    Experienced adult worker €8.65 100%
    Aged under 18 €6.06 70%
    First year from date
of first employment aged over 18 €6.92 80%
    Second year from date
of first employment aged over 18 €7.79 90%

Employee aged over 18, in structured training during working hours
    1st one third period €6.49 75%
    2nd one third period €6.92 80%
    3rd one third period €7.79 90%'

once you turn 18 the rate changes to a big €6.92 in your situation. when you are there a full year then your rate will jump to €7.79 rate

i had the exact same issue and i thought it thru like you but when NERA came in they ate the head of me.

if an employee is 17 starting their position they get the €6.06 rate

when they turn 18 (assuming they were 17 and 6 months when starting for example) they get the €6.92 rate as they are still in their first year of employment

then on the full year anniversary of their start date and go into their second year of employment as an over 18 they get the €7.79 rate.

i cannot tell you the trouble i got into and the money i had to back pay.

Sorry, are you an employer or an employee?

If you are an employer then fair enough.
If, on the other hand, you are an employee then sweet jesus

    No boo hiss at all.

I suppose that's why the rules are there. I thought you were an employee hence my original shock.
