    Hi all.
I''m thinking strongly of purchasing a classic from Oz. Perth to be more precise and I know the port town of Fremantle isn't too far away, where the seller said he could drop off the car.
I've never done this before and am looking for some advice.
Where do I start? Obviously I'd need a container.
Also is the any vat or customs duty etc?
    Thanks for any help.

Yes and yes. Think it's charged on the whole lot too. I think customs duty is a standard EU tariff, but VAT rate obviously varies.

Next to no advantage importing via the UK from 4th January 2011 with the VAT rate there rising to 20%.

A really bad idea unless you have deep pockets, a lot of patience and an ultra rare car that can ONLY be found in Australia.

Short form: Bend over, they're going to take a run-up at you.

Well I wouldn't say the car could ONLY be got Australia but the history, receipts, documentation, photos and work that has been carried out is exceptional. As too is the price and condition.
In other words, no; you wouldn't have a hope of getting one here like it at the price!
TBH I am more looking for info on who I'd need to contact re freight etc etc.
I have already worked out duty and vat costs.

I take it that's a rough guestimate as you can't exactly work those costs out until you know the cost of all the transportation.

Yes I've worked out customs duty and vat costs based on the selling price of the car. I think its 10% plus 21% vat on top of both.
Cost of freight is another seperate cost altogether something of which I'm unsure. Maybe a grand or more?
I suppose I'm asking about shipping companies, procedures etc.

i think the duty and vat are on all costs to bring the car to ireland shipping included

It worked out on the full monty:

Let's say (plucking figures out of the air)

    Car = €5000
    Shipping, insurance, etc. = €2000
so total on landing = €7000

    + 10% Import duty (€700) = €7700
    + 21% VAT (€1617) = €9317

If the car moves under it's own steam, it may be cheaper to send on ro-ro service (if available), rather than boxing it up.

I guess if you get the freight costs and add 20+ % to them you're on the right track.

You'll also probably be stung for "port charges" - so make sure you find out if these are included in the freight cost (they are usually separate bills). They'll be a few hundred so watch out.

Once you have a FINAL amount then you are in a position to see if there is a car of similar quality in the UK for the same price - and much less hassle/waiting.

Mad Max would melt in the Irish climate. He'd have to be kept beside a nice warm fire for most of the year... You'd never get to drive the beast.....
