Hi, I was considering getting the i phone 4 soon and when I seen the news last month about the network issues it kind of put me off. I see from their website a new firmware 4.0.2 is available that claims to fix these issues.

I was wondering can anybody tell me if its working ok, or have people had a lot of problems with their new i phone 4?

    thanks in advance

The issue that was on the news referred to the phone losing signal when gripped in a unique way, if you put a bumper or case onto it it rules out this problem. I put a case onto mine to mind it and apple are giving a case or bumper free to all new iPhone 4 users.

There are known issues with the phone, a bumper is not the correct solution and it is not the only issue. There are some just as feature rich phones available at the moment that do not require bumpers or software updates every other day.
A smart consumer would not intentionally buy a faulty product.
Maybe this is the one not to buy if you've any doubts. There will be an iPhone 5 at some stage.
It may be worth looking at the likes of the htc, Sony and samsung smart phones. All just as good if not better.

I received my phone on Friday and that issue was in the back of my mind, considering I hold the phone in my left hand. It is definitely an issue some people have had.

However, I did the death grip test without any cover and didn't see any change in the signal bars (iOS 4.0.1). While there are several factors such as good signal strength, sweaty palms etc. based on my limited experience I haven't had a problem yet.

I live and use my iPhone 4 out in the country. 3G singalong is weak here and variable. Switching between E and 3G on the O2 network constantly.

Have not dropped a single call or noticed any difference between the 4 and my old 3G. I am using a protective cover but even for my first week without it there were no dropped calls.

I've had a few dropped calls and bad signals and am quite disappointed with that obviously. I have ordered a free snap protective cover from the Apple website. Does anyone know if this will improve things or if I need a special one?

As long as the case covers the side of the phone (with the volume switches) then you'll be fine.
Gotta say..this is my first iphone and I love it..on 3 as well and happy with the coverage..
These are a few places I can't get it due to blackspots but both O2 and Vodafone are the same in these areas..(I have a O2 work dongle and my next door neighbor has a vodafone and she can't get a 3g signal either- she's cute so I let her piggyback on my eircom broadband)

Mine is dropping calls constantly. Like 1 out of 2 phone calls will be dropped, sometimes repeatedly several times in a row. I hold the phone with just 2 fingers at the top, still drops. Tried holding the back of it with it pushed against my ear ie. not touching antenna at all.. and it drops. Have ordered a bumper for all the good it is going to do. If that doesnt work its going back to Apple.

the bumper or case will make a huge difference as you're no longer in contact with the phone itself.
If I take the case off mine I can replicate the death grip thus bringing it from 5 bars down to "searching" and a loss of the 3g signal.
As soon as my hand comes off it signal returns to normal.
Since I always have a case I never have an issue with it.

thanks for all the replies folks, judging by some peoples experiences, I am not willing to pay that kind of money for a phone that is not 100% reliable. May have to hold out for an iphone 5!
