Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz or Fidel Castro led his country from December 1959 until his resignation in February this year. Castro came to power as a result of the Cuban revolution that overthrew the dictator Fulgencio Batista, and shortly thereafter became Prime Minister of Cuba.

Although the US has tried hard to get rid of him, Castro outlasted no fewer than nine American presidents since he took power.

Well I generally have a disdain for dictators, whether left wing or right wing, or anywhere in between wing. Mugabe is a thug, and so is Castro. Both are motivated only by retaining power. The only difference really is that Castro dresses his regime up with a left wing veneer, and so is lionised by many in th West who should know better, and don't seem to find the irony in the fact that the rights which allow them to express their opinions openly, are non-existent in Cuba.

No it's not. True, Cuba has a one tier health system with equal access for all (well except for Party cronies), and generally well trained doctors, but the services provided are basic to say the least. They have little of the advanced diagnostic equipment that are taken for granted in most western health systems, and the doctors don't have access to the most up to date information or technology. An Irish person living in Cuba would no doubt be impressed at the vailability of medical services, but would be quite shocked at the paucity of those services.
