    Hello,
can I get peoples opinions on cattle trailers. Seems to be the 3 big makes: ivfor williams, nugent, hudson.

Need it for transporting about 4/5 2 yr old cattle.

Can they be pulled behind a tractor as well or if you use a tractor will the hitch be too high leaving only one trailer axle on the ground?

    THANKS

We have a nugent 12x6. Its a good strong and sturdy trailer that is easily pulled behind a 2.5 L200. I like it a lot and think its made from better stuff then the Ifor williams. Also have a 10x5 crooks trailer. its almost 20 years old and has withstood a lot of abuse. I recently put new brakes and tyres on it. Its a great sturdy trailer if you're only bringing 1 or 2 animals and always easily pulled. You'd hardly know its behind the jeep.

If you have the right height hitch for your tractor then you can pull the trailer on all 4 wheels. We have a MF 168 and its hitched turned upside down is the right height. Made a 3 pint linkage for the New Holland to pull the trailer, as its hitch is much higher off teh ground.

    Thanks Rellig,
I read an old thread on boards alright about trailers and i remember you mentioned the nugent.

I dont have a jeep just a car van but I would most be using it on the back of the tractor anyhow. its a new holland as well ;).

You couldnt put up a pic of the 3 point linkage could you?

    Thanks,

I had to modify the hitch on the back of my David Brown 995 too, to let down the 4 wheels even on the ground. I have an Ifor williams, 10'x6'. I turned the hitch upside down, like Reilig said.
I could also let the hitch back about a foot. This meant that I could turn tighter and not worry about getting caught at the tyres. Worth keeping in mind this!

Its something like this - except the ball is bolted through the mainframe for more strength. leaves the trailer well behind the tractor for sharper turns and less chance of getting it caught in the wheels.

    http://www.machineshed.co.nz/Towbar.html

It won't work with smaller tractors that don't have an assistor ram on the lift. On these tractors, if the cattle go to the back of the trailer then the weight will lift up the frame on the lift arms. This would happen on our 168, but the lift arms on the New holland won't lift up at all if the weight goes to the back of the trailer.

I 've a hudson flat trailer for behind the jeep. its a 12"6 x 6"6. Its in great nick, its only 4 years old and I got it pretty cheap off donedeal. Its a good trailer. Very well made. I can just about get 6 round bales of silage onto it :) I know a few people with Hudson cattle Trailers and they're very happy with them.

not wishing to go off topic here but if buying secondhand be careful

my cousin's ivor williams box was stolen a little over a year ago and a few of us were keeping an eye out for it, he spotted it on donedeal a couple of weeks ago with a very low reserve , actually wasn't too far from his home , got a friend of his to make enquiries and arranged a meet up,

the gardai were also informed and moved in when they got the signal that it was the trailer

I believe another couple were found in the "vendor's premises

he is one of the lucky ones there are dozens of stolen trailers still been offered for sale

I would agree with relig that the nugent would be the best for tractor work
