It's always a shame when young players are forced to retire
Chelsea's England Under 19 defender Sam Hutchinson has retired through injury at the age of 21.

The highly-rated youngster suffered a reoccurrence of the knee trouble that affected his past three seasons and will work at the club’s academy while also studying sports science at university.

Hutchinson made his first-team debut in 2007, with then-manager Jose Mourinho describing him as a future permanent member of the Chelsea squad.

He was called into the England Under 21 set-up but the knee injury forced him to withdraw.

In total Hutchinson started one game for Chelsea and made three substitute appearances.

Jose had singled him out to be "One to watch" in the future. Shame.

Real shame. Sad when a young player with loads of potential has to quit.

Found this very sad, when I read it. Poor kid. Apparently Chelsea are keeping him on as a "player mentor" or something. Fair play.
