How much info do I need to give an estate agent?

Myself and some friends are moving into a house soon and I'm just wondering how much information the estate agent needs to draw up a lease. I've lived in other rented accomodation before and haven't been asked for this much personal information.
Here is what he is asking for:
Full name and home address for each resident
    PPS number
Copy of passport or driving licence
    Landlord reference
    Work reference

Now I understand the home address, passport and previous landlord reference but I'm struggling to think of a use for a work reference. There are 3 of us, 1 is a teacher, I'm a student and work pat-time and the other is a student who doesn't work. He's aware of this so why ask for the work reference. And is he legally entitled to our PPS number? I can't see why he needs it.

Work reference is fairly standard - they don't want someone who's going to move in and start claiming that they don't have money to pay the rent.
