Re-registration fee could be on the way next year

Simi is also seeking changes to the current registration system. It attributes the seasonality in new car sales - with 54 per cent taking place in the first quarter and 70 per cent in the first six months of any year - to the prominence of the year of registration on numberplates. It is calling for a discussion with the Garda, local authorities and motorists on changes to the current format.

Alongside a wider review of the numberplate system, Simi is proposing a new scheme be introduced next year allowing buyers of used cars to re-register the vehicle in their home county. Alan Nolan, Simi director general, said: “A fee of up to €250 could be charged for this change, which local authorities could then reinvest back into the local road network.”

It was on the radio earlier today that they might enforce it, joke if they do.

I read that like it's they're not going to make you do it, it's an option.

Some people say 'I wont buy that, it doesn't have a D reg!' - so if this goes through, they can buy an MH plate, but change it to D if they want.

    That was my understanding anyhow!

Nobody is forcing you to re register your car... It's just optional. I could not care less if I had a cork or a tip reg etc..

Yeah right - into NAMA more like it!
The roads won't see anything from new taxes!

I think you might have read that wrong:p

I dont see the problem with this tbh. I dont really the point in it, but if someone wants to spend €250 to change the county on their car then more power to them.

I dont want to see them change the format of the reg numbers tho. IMO we have one of the best systems of car reg plates I have ever seen and there is no need to change it.

I want my car to be a Carlow reg..
Dublin reg is the worst thing on it..it clearly shows the car has only ever been drove in city traffic. Now I know the Carlow reg will show it's only ever drove around fields and that it has towed trailers around but I prefer it.

well then the radio have read it wrong 2! Its just a proposal to give people the option of changing if they buy a 2nd hand car and thats it, not another tax or extra cost, completley optional!

"Car dealers don't like having a registration plate from another county on their forecourt, as it can be of lesser value, so having the facility to change this would be of benefit to them in particular.

Why would you want to! Total waste of money! Personal regs is the way to go! Like the DVLA offer! You can get one from as little as 50quid, it might have total crap on it, but it will hide the age of your car!

Enforce what? They are giving the option to reregister the car should you wish. They are not proposing that it be manditory to reregister the car to your county when you buy it.

You might do if its parked outside croker over the next few weekends - might be disgruntled Dublin and Kilkenny supporters who don't like the look of it...:D

I'm the kind of person they'd probably get 500 off from this, I'd be putting a DL reg on and then a D to sell it :(

About 8 years back I had a CW reg BMW 323 Coupe. I was hounded to sell it by a chap I know because he liked the car and his initials were 'CW'!

While I'm on it there's a county in Northern Romania called Suceava and the code for it is 'SV' ;)

Private / random reg should also be a option, never mind this gombeen nanny state ****e of being forced to permanently display the first owners home county and the age of the car.

Keep the current format - it's the best amongst all of the number plates I've seen so far. Especially as it shows the age of the car and the area of first registration.

It's a nice idea to allow the subsequent owners to change the county.

As long as it's not enforced that a subsequent owner must re-register the car if they are living in a different county than the original owner, as that would not be a good idea. If things were to go that far, then it's be just as good to follow the Swiss registration method where the plate follows the car owner, instead of the car.
