car warranty

i bought a 08 car 5 months ago from an independent garage. i got a 6 month engine and gearbox warranty. about 7 weeks ago the gearbox which is a dsg gearbox starting giving hassle. i made the garage aware at the time and it was alot of ringing and nobody ringing back when they said they would.

i believe the problem with the box is a common one and a certain part is required which costs around 2k. the symptoms are the same as this problem as listed on many websites and forums. i have informed the garage of this.

anyway this week after a lot of messing around the garage finally took it to a dealer to have it looked at. they did a bit of work and an oil change to the dsg box to the value of 100 euro. i was then told the car was fixed so i picked it up and yes the problem is still there as bad as ever. i then rang the garage back who said they would get back to me and im still waiting.

its now dragging into the 8th week with this problem, the end of the warranty is getting closer and no matter how much i get annoyed with the garage they are no closer to fixing the car.

what can i do to get them to fix it? do i threaten a solicitor?

would i be covered if i took this car to another dealer myself and got them to do the work then sent the bill to the garage where i bought it.

the couple of days i dropped my car to this garage ive had to get public transport home, apparently they dont give customers cars so a 40minute drive turns into 1hr 30mins of darts and buses.

Write to them documenting the history and issue.

Tell them what you want done.

As above but call into them and demand a fix. Be polite above all else. I know it matters little but are they SIMI registered?

What month in 2008 was the car first registered? Might it still be under factory warranty? If not i'd follow Henry Ford III's advice, along with a thread of legal action.

write to who? the garage where i bought it??
can i just tell them what i want done?

no i dont think they are simi registered unfortunately.

the factory warranty is up since January this year as it was registered in jan 08

Park the car right outside the garage with signs inside it saying how they are not fixing the car under warranty!

VWs have a TWO year warranty? Speaks volumes really.

    If it has a DSG box it's a VW/Seat/Skoda ...

I think the only way is to leave the car with them, if they wont call you back just land the car on them and tell them you want it fixed or you will be contacting your solicitor. lots of cowboys around unfortunatly and they are well used to treating people like this so dont leave it do it straight away

Can you be more specific? what brand, model and service history?

There is a service campaign for many DSG's where gear oil is changed. This is done FOC when you go to the dealer and if your car meets the criteria. If you car has a full service history you will get goodwill warranty on part if not all the repair while its within its 3rd year.

If it hasnt been serviced at a dealer you are less likely to get goodwill cover.

its a seat and has a full service history, most with a main dealer.
is this goodwill cover just on dsg's?

i managed to speak with them over the phone today. they are telling me it has to get another gear oil change even though it just had that done on tuesday. i think they are just trying to give me the run around so think its time for a solicitor. anyone know how much it is for a consultation with a solicitor?

Goodwill can cover any part. You should get at least some goodwill on a DSG.
Have you asked the garage did they apply for goodwill?
Applying for goodwill is at the dealer discretion so choose yout words carefully.

    BTW what millage has it?

DSG's need a gearoil and filter change every 60k. Has it been done?

Not a great idea and would only serve to create extra hassle but defo take Henry Fords advise and put your problems / concerns on record .

    DOCUMENT EVERYTHING

Personally, I would ring the indy-dealer and book it into their workshop for investigation. Bring the reciept for the oil-change. Bring a letter listing all the faults with the gearbox/car.

Refuse to accept it back if its not fixed.

IMO they are delaying the issue so your warranty will run out. Act on this ASAP
