Renting an automatic, best price?

I have a friend visiting Ireland for a week for the first week of September. They want to rent a car and would prefer an automatic (they've never driven manual). On the site http://www.reservacar-dublinairport.com/, they're being quoted 3-4 the price to rent an automatic Avensis over a manual. Is this normal? Is it really 8-900 Euro to rent an automatic car that size for a week here?

Just checked Avis, and there is a difference of €149 between a Manual and an Automatic in the same class for the first week in september
Manual Mondeo is €250, and the Auto Avensis is €399

Never mind the €220 difference between the small class (manual corsa and auto micra)!

Surely the difference in the cost price of the car between manual and auto doesn't justify those rate differences???
Or the hire companies know that the yanks will only rent auto's so jack up the prices??

Edit: Just checked budget, and difference between the Mondeo manual and Avensis auto is €270!!!

Have they tried booking through any of the hire company direct sites to compare prices?

It's not just the cost price of the cars to consider, you've also got to take in to account the utilisation rates.

Manual cars will probably be on rent about 90% of the time. I'd be surprised if the Auto's are on rent 50% of the time.

Enterprise were charging a 25% premium on Auto's last time I checked.
