Scrap v Goverment Scheme

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I know v little about cars (they take me from A to B - thats it..) but..... i've a 94 Escort and am not sure whether i'd be better off going into a garage and getting a few bob from the goverment scrappage scheme when buying the new car. Or should i scrap it myself?

I'm going in to buy a Peugeot 5008 in next couple of months. What is the best option is a dealer going to give me the best deal on? (I'm crap at haggling btw..)

    Option 1
Escort qualify's for the goverment scrappage scheme. So I think the garage will reduce 2500 off the new car and scrap it themselves.

    Option 2
I go in with cash/cheque and want to buy the peugeot with some haggling. I will scrap the escort myself (btw-where can i get it scrapped and how much does it cost me?).

tks for your advice. Sorry if its a bit long-winded above but i'm really a car novice.. tks again

Best thing is to call around to a number of garages and get prices to change.

Renault are giving some of the best scrappage scheme discounts (on top of the Government's scheme discount) at the moment so it might be worth looking at the Scenic model as an alternative to the 5008.

Other than that get a price from the dealer for both buying straight/scrapping the car yourself or buying through the offical scrappage scheme.

The way I see it, when you buy a car, you immediately lose €3-4k on it and there goes your scrappage money.

Better to see how much you can scrap your car for. You might get more breaking it. Even if you get around 1000eur on it, you can buy a good used car for much less price than a new car and you save a lot more money.

There are lots of breakers yards around the country where you can take your car to break it.

If there's nothing wrong with the Escort, why not sell it privately for a few hundred quid and then buy the 5008 on a straight deal? It would surely be better than just scrapping for no reason and getting no money for it.

http://www.ford.ie/FordService/EndofLifeVehicles will take it for free - however you may be able to get a few quid for it rather than just give it to them.

    Tks folks For the replies

There's nothing wrong with the escort mechanically-it's a great car for us. It's gone from my wifes runaround car to be the family car in the last couple of years. Only hassle with it is that the lock on the drivers door is broken-so it can never be fully locked.

I think the concensus is here that I'd get a better deal if I I done a straight cash deal on the purchase. While at the same time flogging mine off (rather than breaking it up).
I also think the Bazz has the right idea- get a price from the dealer for both buying straight/scrapping the car myself or buying through the offical scrappage scheme.

Stick it up on Donedeal and you'd be surprised, you might get more for it than you expect. Small enough cars with NCT are always in demand.
