Not sure if this will work for me, as my goal is short term (before Berlin marathon in 6 weeks time), so approximately 6lbs in 6 weeks. I don't plan to change my diet radically, just cut out the crap for the next 5 weeks (after my holiday next week!). I have already given up the booze, which will provide me with most of my weight loss.

My weight tends to fluctutate wildly (after a long run, it can be as low as 11st3'). When do you weight yourself?

In the morning. Scales in bathroom so just do a quick hop on them then.

O/T but six weeks of 2-3 bags of haribo a day, plus crisps, plus chocolate, plus alchol, and no training. Save on heating bills during the winter I suppose though.

Sure I may as well go for the same. I thoroughly intend to put it all back on within 24 hours.

I weighted my pasta for lunch today, I never thought I'd see that day.

Will join in for the laugh. I just love food & running allows me to eat whatever I want - but I know if I'm to improve any further I'm going to have to change my body composition. Will try get BF stats for next recording :)
0.5kg per week reduction is the plan

What's obvious from the list so far is that noone really needs to lose weight & that athletes always have very ambitious targets :)

Funnily enough have just started to read a book mentioned by tunney in another post - Racing Weight. Just at the introduction now, but as part of that, the author compares athletes(I use this in the loosest possible term as it would include me :)) vs. people that don't exercise and concurs that more or less the same percentage want to "improve" their weight (I think it's about 78%) but that the motivation behind it differs greatly.

He also touches on what I mentioned in a different thread but uses real figures. The average man today is substantially lardier than he would have been 10-15 years ago but convinces themselves they are normal and don't need to lose weight. Enjoying it so far.

yes, it's very well laid out. Only into the first few chapters. Did have a bit of a rolly eye moment when the Lance Armstrong hero worship started but luckily that only lasted for a few pages.

Found the sketches of the different athlete body types very interesting. And looking forward to learning more!

How do you copy the table to add an entry?

    snap!

There is a method he has for monitoring and improving the quality of your daily intake of food later in the book that is really useful and actually implementable.

on the last post with the table, use the quote function, it'll copy the text needed.

Remove the quote functionality from the beginning and end of the text, it'll be fairly self-explanatory how to add your own entry in (basically all the column text divided by the | character

First one who NEEDS to lose the weight!

Giving 5 months for this initial goal. Don't have a scale in my house so will probably only update every 2 weeks.

How are people measuring their body fat?

    1. using a calipers?
    2. using a scales (have read they're wildly inaccurate)?
    3. getting someone to measure for them?
    4. educated guess based on previous results?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,584 ✭✭✭✭tunney

    2. using a scales. Inaccurate but consistent provided you do it at the same time of day, fully hydrated, after using the bathroom and weight your feet first.

Scales for me. Probably not 100% accurate but I reckon it's in and around the right weight (it was 10-15 lbs more than i expected though!).

I guess as long as I use the same scale over the next while, it should be an accurate measure of the weight lost.

    1. Calipers at 14 different points done by a scientist so as much as I thought I was around 11-12%, she said 14% so I'm inclined to believe her  65kg of lean mass though so I haven't lost too much muscle since taking up endurance stuff :)

One of these for me, likewise the figures should be taken with a pinch of salt... but they are consistant if measured same time each day etc.. this varies from 13% to 15% depending on conditions. There is no way I am 13% tho :D

I'd guess the only accurate way of measuring body fat % would be by post mortem.

I guess nobody is interested in a weight gain thread.

I doubt if even a dedicated boardsie like Krusty would go that far.:)

I'm aware of a method involving total immersion in water to measure body volume, but I don't know how accurate the results are.

Please don't start a weight gain thread, my family would sign me up:D

I'm aware of a method involving total immersion in water to measure body volume, but I don't know how accurate the results are.
Forgot about that method, I guess to be totally accurate you'd need your bone density checking as well which I would expect to be painful.

I'd guess the only accurate way of measuring body fat % would be by post mortem.

I guess nobody is interested in a weight gain thread.

I also too am looking to put on a bit of poundage. I feel all left out in this thread.

I'll start playing next week, or after Dingle. We have a coffee morning in work tomorrow and chocolate biscuit cake, chocolate brownies and other various chocolate laden foodstuffs are a cert to be included.

Great idea. I started cleaning up my diet last week and lost 2.5lbs. Have gone off the rails a bit this week already:(. I have no willpower
