If tesco says they will do it for 1050, then jump at the chance. the 3000 to 5000 seems about right or even cheap for a 17 year old.
most insurance companies arnt intrested till you are 25 to 30 years of age.

But the normal way of getting insured young is for the car to be registered and insured to a parent and for you to be a named driver on the policy.

you are a lot better off to ring them ,sometimes they wont quote online or quote very expensive online . ring them and if you like the quote ask them to send you a proposal form and who ever gives the best quote return there proposal form filled in

    What im going to do now is get online quotes from;

    • Quinn
    • AXA
    • 123.ie
    • Tesco
    • Aviva
And any one else I can try.

Call each one up in order from the expensive to the cheapest, asking if they can beat it write down which is the cheapest then.

    Repeat process.

Try the online quotes but youre almost guaranteed to get a better quote by ringing the companies.

Also try a few brokers who might be able to get you a decent quote.

Try ARB if noone is coming in with an affordable price. Normally speaking they wont give a great price, but i found that at your age they were one of the few willing to take young drivers seriously.

As for the named driver route, its a good way of killing time if you cant get an affordable quote, but if you get a quote that is any way affordable then youre always better off to start with your own policy and start building up a no claims bonus. Itll benefit you more in the long run. And pass your test as soon as you can to get the price of your premium down!

I did a bit of searching on this a while ago and would like to know how you get on.

My insurance is around 500 with Allianz(with whom I am happy). They want 1200 odd to add my 17 year old son, prov lic on to the policy.

I did a Quinn on line quote to move the whole policy to them and they were quoting me 880 for us both which is remarkably good value. I have not pursued this any further yet.

Whatever you do, dont go the route of putting your parent as main driver and you as named driver. Best to take the hit an build up some NCB.

Try britton insurance - they were by far the cheapest when I was starting!

Forget about online quotes. They are designed to quote who insurance companies consider to be low risk. A young male driver with no experience doesn't fall into this catagory. Get out the goldenpages and ring every insurance company and broker in it.

Get your full licence before you get your own insurance.

Tesco online quoted me 1050 on a quick quote iv to ring them back tomorrow.

I think if you look at the ASSUMPTIONS you will find that there are a few criteria that you do not fill (e.g. 2 years ncb). If you go on to the full quote, it will reject you as a result. They will then ask you to ring for a quote and at this point will quote you a couple of grand more.

Called tesco found the NCB thing out the hard way.

Called Quinn "At Quinn we don't lower prices or match competitors on new policies" (3.4k~)

Called AXA the woman was helpfull yet still not what Im looking for at 3.4k with another family member with AXA.

Going to try Aviva now. They seem to have big discounts available for young drivers.

    Ignition

    * Our one hour on-road driving assessment
    * Could reduce your car insurance premiums by up to 40%
    * A further 10% discount if you volunteer not to drive between 11pm and 6am

^ Contrary to what their website says its NOT available for provisional drivers.
    Aviva qoute = 5k

A friend of mine recently got fully comp insurance in his own name, 19 y.o. with 2 years experience but having never been a named driver on his own policy. He's only paying 950 with AXA which is really good. They gave a discount because of the university he's in, too.

What age where you starting out of interest max? I found out yesterday their cheap insurance for young drivers through asgard is for age 19 & up. If your 17 or 18 they'll be quoting you from axa or aviva & it'll be in the 3000+ range minimum.

OP there was a dude asking the same question yesterday over in learning to drive:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056002450

Apparently after ringing tescos they said he needed two years NCB.

EDIT: see you already found that out. Surely their online system is a bit handicapped if it quotes you as a 17 year old but then when you ring them you need NCB? How is a 17 year who just got their licence going to have any NCB?
