I was thinking about planning a trip to Moscow or St Petersbergs by train from London( London to Brussells, Brussells to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Russia). It would be with a couple of the lads and next summer sometime for 2 to 3 weeks. I was wondering has anyone had a trip like this or been to Russia?... If so is it recommended, whats it like, safety, what to look out for, how much to save up?

I was in St Petersburg last summer and in Moscow just last weekend. Both are worth seeing but St Petersburg is miles prettier and much more pleasant to explore on foot. I did not travel into Russia on a train but I did it the other way, leaving for Finland. There was no hassle at all - immigration and customs officers boarded the train before the border and left sometime after passing it.

The one thing I would be a bit careful about is your mention of "the lads". Is this some kind of drinking holiday you are planning? If so, be aware that Moscow is the most expensive city in Europe and St Petersburg is not much cheaper. You should go if you are interested in the country and culture. If you want cheap booze, look elsewhere. Also, there are plenty of gangs preying on Western tourists looking to hook up with a Russian lady that are likely to scam you in one way or another.

No its more for the adventure and travel side of things, Amsterdam en route and coming back will be for going out boozing among other things
