Who do you thank?

Here's a lighthearted question for Atheists..(as most threads in here tend to go very deep..)
I was raised catholic, but have lapsed to the point that I should probably just admit I'm atheist. (though the lingering guilt prevents it :D)
So, when something good happens to you , who do you thank?
Eg " nice weather for your holidays?" Ans, " Yeah thanks be to ??"
I used to say thank God, thanks be to Jaysus etc, now the only replacement I have for that is 'Thankfully' which sounds terribly formal..

I say "Thank God". I find the irony delicious :P

Some times I like to mix it up a bit with the odd bit of outrageous blasphamy (only sin that can't be forgiven don't you know), for example "Thank Holy Jesus ****ing a donkey I'm glad it is Friday"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

I don't thank anyone/anything because it was nothing more than pure chance.

So, "Nice weather on your holidays?; "Yep. Deadly".

    I'm partial to "Thank Bejasus".

I don't feel the need to thank anyone for weather or any other naturally occurring event...

    "Nice weather on your holidays?"

    "Yes, it was lovely".

Also a civil 'sin' now you know:o .
I have thanked 'fúck' as Coyle has done, on many occasions.
Heh heh, might just start thanking Allah, as funglegunk has done, for the shock factor :pac:

I thank everyones imaginary friends on a rotational basis. Today is 'Thank Jesus', tomorrow is 'Thank the Hipno Toad', the next day 'Thanks Colonel Sanders' and so on.

I don't think I use that formulation much, but I do catch myself "For the love of God" occasionally. Some people substitute Pete or Mike, but that just sounds kind of random to me. However, Futurama has provided me with a wonderful expression I use on occasion:

    "Sweet Zombie Jesus!"

I sometimes say thanks be to Odin, Isis, etc as it is funny to see peoples reaction. Its amazing to see that most people are unconscious about saying thanks be to god 10 times a day.

I say thankfully or thank goodness most ofthe time though.

Curiously, this probably isn't the nature of the so called 'unforgivable sin'. Rather, it's the refusal* to obey the command to repent (and be forgiven) that constitutes said sin. Which is logical enough - you can't apply forgiveness to someone who refuses it being applied.

    * as per our previous discussion, a person can refuse to obey God without believing in God.

I say thanks be to jaysuz lord blessuz and saaaave uz through pure habit, coloquial country terms are very endearing, if entirely meaningless.

I think if anything, thank christ would pop out, as an entirely empty phrase I have picked up through habit and everyone around me saying them, I have so little regard for the supposed meaning of such words that it wouldn't even pop up on my radar. Thank fuck if I was particularily nervous about something, it is a more powerful word after all.

    Thank Crunchie.

What about with sneezing? Do you still say Bless You?

I've taken to saying the German gesundheit

I've never found it necessary to thank anyone for the weather, but occasionally I find a nod to Evelyn Cusack is appropriate (she always gives good weather).

I hate the phrase "thanks be to god", it's just so...country. I usually respond with "why, what did he do?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,578 ✭✭✭✭Turtwig

My most common ones are :

    "Thank f*ck."
    "Thank Heavens."
"Praise Allah" (I do this one, just for the looks people give me.)
    "Thank you."
    "Thanks be to Jesus."
    "Thank God."

I don't say anything when either myself or other people sneeze.

The one that gets me is in a situation where I'd say "hopefully", the grandparents and other older relatives say "god willing", they also picked up "insh'allah" (no idea how to spell it).
    What's wrong with "hopefully"!

i dont thank , end of story

the thing that always amuses me about believers more than anything else is that they seem to thank god for marvelous sunshine but never once in a century floods like the kind we see now in pakistan , i mean if his powers are limitless , surely he must be responsible for both

It is not uncommon for me to thank the Emperor.

I have also been partial to "by the Dark Gods", "oh your God" and the usual f based expletive that has been discussed at length.

I have used something similar, like 'If the Gods are good". The look on peoples faces, as they're trying to work out if you're serious:P

God only intervenes to do good stuff you see, when anything bad happens it's free will. God is pretty much in a no-lose situation there.

Also interesting to note that when religious people say that something is good (and therefore a "gift of god" or somesuch) or that something is bad (and part of god's inexplicable plan), they're actually deciding the moral value of god's actions -- something that would have gotten you a lightening bolt up the bum in a less permissive religion.

i thought i was an atheist but then if the spiritual world does not exist

    how does that explain ghosts??

there is evidence all over the world to suggest that there are ghosts

there couldn't possibly be logical explanations for all these strange stories of ghosts

Way off topic :D And in an effort not to bite I will make the following statement. It is technically possible to be an atheist and believe in ghosts. You just don't believe in a god.

Seems strange. But then I've seen more ludicrous statements in recent times ;D

I'd love someone to point me in the direction of the "evidence". (Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray films don't count).

Why couldn't there possibly be logical explanations?

Well here's your solution. You can still be an atheist and believe in a spiritual world, just don't believe in a deity.
