Werder Bremen v Sampdoria RTE2 19:45

Coverage from RTE 2 starts at 7:00

Should be an exciting match between two attacking teams. It was originally billed as 'Cassano v Oezil' . Important match in terms of Bundesliga v Serie A. If Werder Bremen wins it will mean that both Serie A and the Bundesliga have three teams in the CL group stages and it pushes them closer to having three automatic qualification places taking one from Serie A. If Samapadoria win then Serie A will have 4 teams in the CL group stages compared to the Bundesligas 2.

Italy only pipped Germany to the 4 CL spots by 0.12 of a Co-efficient point last season. Italian teams need to out preform German teams in all competitions this season as they are already about 5 Co-efficient points behind Germany for next season.

Sampdoria were excellent last season with Cassano and Pazzini playing up front in a 4-2-2-2 formation for the majority. They usually play two deep lying DMs one of which is Captain Palombo who both Milan and Juve have expressed interest in this summer.

I'm looking forward to it. Although I don't know a lot about Sampdoria's team as I don't follow Serie A as close as I have in the past.

This is Marko Marins chance to step up now that Özil is gone.

Almeida and Pizzaro start for Bremen, Marin is on the bench.

No surprises in the Sampdoria line up.

LOL@RTE showing this match but couldn't show the national team live against Argentina in their first match at their new home

    This is the champions league.
RTÉ have the rights to the Champions League.

Ireland v Argentina was a friendly.
RTÉ didn't have the rights to this friendly.

But in all fairness, they really should have the rights. Thats an arguement for another day...

If something more Iberian appeals, ITV4 are showing Braga v Sevilla.

    99? Is he a flake?

RTÉ have to show a game from this round of the Champions League. They don't have a choice. Much like how TV3 will probably be showing the 2nd leg of this game next Tuesday.

what was Hamilton just rabbiting on about in relation to the assistant referees (lines men) and the one behind the goals, he made a right hash at trying to explain their roles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭_Bella_

    Sky sports said 9+9 = 18 so that's why it's 99.

    Either way its stupid :pac:.

Hamilton celebrated that like a crucial Ireland goal

I'd like to see Sampdoria make it through and I reckon George is in the same camp. Who wouldn't like to see Cassano in the Champions League. Bad enough that we couldn't see him during the World Cup.

Enyeama (the Nigeria keeper) has put Tel Aviv one nil up against Salzburg from the penalty spot. Sweet.

Hunt is having a stormer for Bremen so far.
I would have started Marin instead of Hunt if I was in charge.
    That's why I'm not :o.

    Enyeama - 1
    Heskey - 0

I wouldn't be surprised if Sampdoria knick a winner in the 2nd half, from a set piece or counter attack. Bremen have dominated possession but Sampdoria looked far more threatening when they did attack.

Bremen seemed to be playing too narrow at times, which was playing into the hands of Palombo and Tissoni (who has been excellent imo).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭_Bella_

Definitely wouldn't be surprised if Sampdoria score on the counter. But I think that Werder will get a goal. I'm sure Marin wll come on in the second half and will liven things up.

He looked so awkward lining it up, looked like it was gonna hit the corner flag by his body shape.

    Well done ref, well done!

Get the F off the pitch.

Wallner tucks away a penalty for Redbull Salzburg, still in trouble as far as the tie goes, 3-2 down at home.

    Edit: 3-0! Over.

Great stuff, now hopefully grab a few more and completely finish the tie.

And thats 3! Can't see Sampdoria coming back from this. Really glad for Bremen. They are a great team to watch even with their suicidal defending!

Some of Bremen's passing is ****ing lovely!

Edit: As of 5 minutes ago, 2 goals in as many minutes in the Partizan Belgrade - Anderlecht tie, 2-2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,472 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

That has turned it around now.

    3-1 - Pazzini

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭_Bella_

Well that puts Sampdoria back in the tie! Bremen should be kicking themselves!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

Mmm, this makes for an interesting tie in Italy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭_Bella_

2nd leg kicks off at 7:45 on tv3.

This leg could end up being pretty exciting if Sampdoria get an early goal. Bremen just lost 4-1 and hardly have the best defence.
