I'm looking at buying a 2001 audi a4. Anyone any experience with these? I heard they can be expensive to service? Any ideas what kind of problems can go wrong with them? also how much difference in terms of cost these days is running a diesel instead of petrol?
    Thanks

I don't know a lot about cars but here's my tuppenceworth...

I have an 01 A4 1.6 Petrol SE (early '01, so not the newer shape).

I've had it 3.5 years now and haven't had any trouble at all, except a couple of things mentioned below. I get it serviced regularly at a local (very good and reliable) indie mechanic and it usually comes in around 180 for a full service (when there are no brake pads etc to be replaced). The car gets checked out head to toe as part of this price.

besides the servicing, the only other issues I've had in the time I've owned it have been wiper motor and coil pack, both replaced

Unfortunately I may need to sell it to get an estate of some sort, more space needed for baby and music gear!

Anyway, I'm not sure if that servicing is expensive but that's pretty much the basic price for a no-complications full service and health check with my mechanic.

Go for the 1.9TDI 130BHP if you can.

Got the wifes Octavia Tdi(same engine and chassis as the A4) serviced (oil and all filters) yesterday by local indie for €160 including new brake pads.Check front suspension as we've replace most of it on the occy but it has 150k on clock and roads round my way are ****e.Also timing belt at 60k intervals can be costly as most of the front of the car has to be dismantled

The Octavia and Audi A4 don't share the same chassis. The Octavia shares it's chassis with the A3.

Indeed, Id say the only major common part would be the 1.9 diesel, but whether Skoda had the 130 is another question.

Yep, A4 is shared with the Passat and Superb.

OP a 9 year old A4 is not going to be expensive to service, as long as you don't bring it to a main dealer.

All cars are the same, oil and filters ;)

By the way, I would definitely get a diesel, the petrol ones would be next to impossible to sell on.
