I'm in the process of reading whipping girl and I've consulted many online resources. Yet I'm still confused by the term Transgender. Is it a blanket term for all, i.e. Cross Dressers, Drag Kings and Queens, Transvestites and Transsexuals or does it exclude Transsexuals because we actually make that jump from one gender to another.

It's a blanket term for all gender non-conformers really. Transsexuals are not conforming to their birth sex, so can't be excluded from this.

As far as I'm aware it covers everything. But I really don't know if cross dressers and drag performers should be counted, but they are anyway.

Thanks for clearing that up. Everything I've read always seems to distingush the too for some reason.

Its an umbrella term that includes everything - I know why this is confusing for you - people use the term transgender when in fact what they mean is transsexual

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I kinda prefer transgender to transsexual, it's all about what you're emphasizing, transgender puts emphasis on gender
