Normal a cell in excel is named as follows: R1C3 but I am getting strange references like R[7]C[-2]. Can anyone explain why this is is and how to revert to normal reference cell naming?

There is a setting in Excel which sets this option. Depends on what version of Excel you are using.

Try entering R1CI Reference style in the Excel Help
Put an underline under the C
This should point you to a setting which can be unticked

In Excel 2007 it's under Excel Options, Formulas, in the section Working with formulas.

In Excel 2003, go to Tools -> Options.

    Click on the General Tab.

Under the settings, Check or uncheck R1C1 reference style to use it or to change it to A1 reference style.

In Excel 2010 it's under File, Options, Formulas, in the section Working with formulas.
