Yeah, I was wondering this too. If I connect my iphone to my laptop using the USB connection and run MyWi....does it cost me extra on my montly bill from o2 on the unlimited data plan?

No it doesn't cost any extra.

I've been using it for months and hasn't affected my bill at all.

    Thanks Jamie.

    Another quick question just.
Even though I have an unlimited data plan subject to o2's fair usage policy I have read online that if I go over 3GB a month o2 will get in contact and charge me extra? Is this true?

No such thing as unlimited, they were told to stop selling it as that some time ago. 3GB limit, and yes they can charge for going over it.

If O2 notice extra usage, like a spike in downloading on your account, they will assume you are tethering and didn't inform them. Then they will charge you lots and lots according to their ridiculously high tethering charges. I think MyWi manages to avoid those nasty charges though, but I'm not 100% sure just yet...and I wouldn't go asking O2 if I were you.

Also, I have just done a Speed Test, comparing MyWi on iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3 (O2 contract) against my 3 Broadband Dongle (Huawei E122).

The iPhone running MyWi hits 2.44MB. The 3 dongle gets .75 MB average. The iPhone signal is strong and constant (in this location). The 3 dongle has been giving me problems for months as it keeps disconnecting and slowing down randomly (I only use it in one location).

If MyWi definitely bypasses the O2 carrier charge, I think I'll be ditching my dongle. Of course the downside is that I'll not really be able to download much content as my O2 plan only gives 2GB in a month, where the 3 dongle gives 15GB...but if the damn thing won't stay on it's not much use!

unlock the iphone and keep the 3 sim for data use only. carry it and a paperclip in your wallet. :D
