First Generation iPod Touch owner - slightly clueless!

Here's the story. I bought my 16GB iPod Touch while in the US in July 2008. Over the past two years, I've had very little use for it and, as such, practically left it aside. I've only ever used it for music and a small bit of browsing. To illustrate how little I've used it, I moved into my house over 12 months ago and hadn't used the Touch for browsing in all that time!

I decided that since it's such a great little gadget, I'd like to finally make good use of it. The first place I thought I'd start was by getting some Apps and seeing what they're like. Now it seems that my iPod can't use them. From a bit of digging, it seems it needs a software upgrade that cost $10 a year or two ago but that I can't find any mention of anywhere in iTunes.

I'm usually quite good technically but this is the one and only Apple device I've ever had. I'm not particularly au fait with iTunes or the quirks of Apple etc. Can you help me get the most out of my Touch? Starting with telling me how I can get apps working!!! I'm open to any suggestions and would greatly appreciate any help.

    Thanks,
    NKay.

Edit: Just to say I watch a lot of tv and movies that I download illegallly so the best way of converting these and putting them onto the iPod would be very helpful.

Hi thanks for that. The problem I'm having is that I can only find where to upgrade to iOS 4.0 as that's the latest but that won't work with my older model.. Any ideas on where that it might be found?

Plug the iPod into iTunes and it will ask you to upgrade. Have credit card ready.

Yeah it seems to be. Thanks for that. How did you find it? As I said, I'm pretty poor with iTunes so it could have been me being stupid.
