Am a one parent family on 287 per week and have just been refused rent allowance on my 3 bed property (rent 950 per month). the reason for the refusal of rent allowance was that myself and my ex were living in a council house and this house was surrendered back to the council when we decided to purchase our own private home. Unfortunately the relationship did not last and we have sold the property for an amount which did not quite cover the mortgage. My ex has now moved abroad and does not pay any maintenance whatsoever andI have been refused rent supplement as the council will not allow me back on their waiting list (which is fair enough).

Are there any options whatsover available to me - I am only renting since June and paid deposit and rent upfront on the hope that the rent allowance would come through, I borrowed Julys rent from a friend and now Augusts rent is nearly due and I do not have it and have no means of getting it. I was told I can appeal the rent allowance descision which I will do but I believe the waiting lists for appeals are very long and I do not like my chances of having the descision overturned.

i spoke with the CWO, citizens advice etc and they all say that I need to be able to pay my own rent for 6 months and then I could have applied but would have to have proven that I was in a position to pay the rent when I took up the tenancy - (but because I have applied and been refused I am unable to prove that).

My only other option is to try to get a job but with a 13, 10 and 2 year old the cost of childcare for the 2 year old is going to greatly reduce my chances - there are not too many jobs out there paying over the odds for someone with no qualifications. I have thought about getting a bedsit/one bed but it is so unfair on my 13 year old daughter.

Please can you advise at all - i am sick with worry

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
