Recruitment Agency Newbie!

Hi all, i've got a few questions that i'm hoping some of ye will be able to help me with. I'll start with a bit of background information. I've got a degree in accounting (albeit not a very good one) but have been working in the hospitality sector for the last few years. For a few reasons i really need/want to get out of this job right now. I've applied for a few jobs sporadically over the years but i was happy in my job then so nothing major. While i was doing my degree, i realised that becoming an accountant wasn't something i really wanted to do anymore because of the level of exams with the ACCA etc. to do. But i was told that my degree should qualify me for a broad range of jobs in any case.

Here come the questions. I occasionally browse the job sites for jobs but most of them don't apply to me or require experience, i rarely if ever see ads for "basic" office jobs or the like, or jobs in the civil service etc. Obviosly they don't advertise on these sites. First of all, how does a recruitment agency differ from these job sites? I presume you have to pay for it and from reading the sticky on top of the forum, they will give you a personal level of assistance and "try" to get you a job? Will they have jobs different to these job sites such as civil service/basic office jobs that i mentioned above?

I'm sorry if these questions seem silly or i totally misunderstand what a recruitment agency is, but i really don't have a clue! Any help would be really appreciated.

To be frank, recruitment agencies will put you on the bottom of a pile if you don't have a lot of experience or unique selling points. Its a very tough labour market.

As far as I know you will be paying a certain fee to the recruitment agency once you got a job. I have a friend who got a job through an agency and they ended up processing his weekly payment and he didn't know how much they took out.

This is not true. The company pays the agency not the candiadte.

If you work on contract through an agency then they will pay your wages adn then bill the company for your wages plus their add-on fee. When you agree to work for the company a wage will be agreed on how much more the agency charge is irrelevant as you will have a agreed a wage you are willing to work for.

EG. I work 40 hours a week for company A at €10 per hour. Agency B pays me each week, €400. Agency B then bills company A for €400 plus €120, which is their fee.

Company A will negotiate the wage and the fee separately.
