    Hello,

(I read the charter and I don't think I am asking a medical question)

Myself and my partner are all excited about learning to scuba dive in Mauritius :D in the next few weeks, we've never gone before (i've done some snorkeling). When I was organising with the dive school they said that we need to get a medical certificate before we go.

When I asked the local GP they said it would be 90 euro a person, which seems a bit steep, they also said that they didn't know what form we needed to get filled out. Can anybody advise what form I would need? Also from some digging around it seems that most dive schools only request a medical if you have "the following conditions". So would it be unusual to request one?

    Thanks in advance

Assuming its a Padi school your talking about? You will have a short questionaire on your Discover Scuba Diving form and if you answer yes to one or more of the questions you will need a medical. Not sure but it may be this medical; http://www.padi.com/english/common/courses/forms/pdf/10063-ver2-0.pdf

    Have fun!

AFAIK, it can vary from area to area and it may also vary depending on which training organisation you train with.

For PADI International, which is Ireland & UK you are required to complete the following form, http://www.oceanlife.ie/uploads/forms/medical10063ver20.pdf . If you answer "Yes" to any of the questions on the initial page you are required to attend your doctor with the remainder of the form and have it signed that they approve you for diving.

However, local laws or different regions may have different requirements. So it is possible that this may be one of them. What is the training organisation (PADI, SSI, NAUI etc.) Maybe you should mail another centre in the region and ask them if it is a local legal requirement as in some countries there is far more regulation in diving than in Ireland and the UK.

    Mauritius, ya lucky sods

Thanks for the replies, it is indeed a PADI school, maybe it is best to email them and ask them I guess. It just seems like a lot of money on top of everything else. The reason I don't think we'll be going with another dive school is that this one is in the hotel and uses the swimming pools there.

Now we have to do the theory part of the course online, going completely off topic, how long should I expect that to take me if I'm not stupid?!

I had to get a medical certificate for taking the Rescue Diver course in France. I called my GP, he said "yeah collect it in an hour"; it cost nothing. 90 euro seems like robbery to me!

Got in touch with the dive centre and they said that as long as I didn't have any of the following conditions that we won't need a cert, 180 euro saved :)

I love it. It's €90 euro. We dont know what "it" is. but it's still €90. Classic Ireland for you.

Just reminded to tidy up this thread, it took me nine days of on and off work to chew though the open water online training course in my spare time.
